How to Service and Repair the Control Arm on 2004 Toyota Tacoma?

The first step for lower control arm maintenance requires front wheel removal with a torque setting of 110 Nm (1,150 kgf-cm, 83 ft. lbs.). Use Special Service Tool: 09727-22011 (09727-23010, 09727-23020, 09727-23030, 09727-23040) to compress the coil spring by inserting the fork at its center area before lowering it by turning along the spring. Disconnect the stabilizer bar by removing its two nuts and link along with two retainers, two cushions according to 29.5 Nm (300 kgf-cm, 22 ft. lbs.) for the stabilizer bar side and 90 Nm (920 kgf-cm, 66 ft. lbs.) for the lower arm side. Then remove the two stabilizer bar bracket set bolts with 29 Nm (300 kgf-cm, 22 ft. lbs.) torque. For installation you must support the upper suspension arm and steering knuckle during the step. After that you can remove the nut with cotter pin by applying 110 Nm (1,100 kgf-cm, 80 ft. lbs.) of torque. At this point you should tighten the nut up to 60 degrees if the cotter pin holes do not align correctly. The Special Service Tool (09628-62011) helps disconnect the lower ball joint from the lower suspension arm while guarding against any damage to the lower ball joint boot. Cautiously loosen the lower suspension arm set bolt until you can remove its nut with 200 Nm (2,050 kgf-cm, 148 ft. lbs.) torque. Continue by turning the strut bar front set bolt until you extract its nut with a torque of 300 Nm (3,050 kgf-cm, 221 ft. lbs.). To disassemble the lower suspension arm with the strut bar users must pull out both retention bolts. The installation process requires placing the end of the coil spring against the lower suspension arm seat while removing the Special Service Tool and coil spring. The procedure starts with removing the 2 nuts from the lower suspension arm using a torque of 150 Nm (1,530 kgf-cm, 111 ft. lbs.) before removing the nut and spring bumper with a torque of 43 Nm (440 kgf-cm, 32 ft. lbs.). Cut down the shaded area of the bushing while exposing the tube edge before using Special Service Tool: 09710-30021 (09710-03071, 09710-03141) and a press to extract the bushing from a downward facing position. Use Special Service Tool: 99710-30021 as well as a press to install the new bushing while working from the rear side. The installation process follows the opposite steps of removal while wheel alignment should be checked after finishing the installation.
