2004 Toyota Prius Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How do you replace the Clock Spring Assembly / Spiral Cable on 2004 Toyota Prius?
A: A successful Clock Spring Assembly and Clock Spring replacement process starts with disconnecting the battery negative terminal then aligning the front wheels facing forward. Begin by removing lower parts of the steering wheel cover (No.2 and No.3) and the horn button assembly and steering wheel assembly with Special Service Tool: 09950-50013 and its components (code numbers: 09951-05010, 09952-05010, 09953-05020 and 09954-05021). Start the Clock Spring Assembly / Clock Spring replacement process by disconnecting the steering column cover and its clock spring sub-assembly connectors while maintaining caution of the Air Bag wire harness. Also detach the three claw fasteners. The clock spring sub-assembly requires immediate replacement when it presents scratches, cracks, dents or chips. You should install the new clock spring sub-assembly with steady front wheels and the turn signal switch in neutral position since this prevents pin damage. The clock spring sub-assembly connectors should be attached while maintaining special attention to the Air Bag connector. Before proceeding with installation of the steering column cover you must verify the power switch at off position while maintaining the battery negative terminal disconnected for at least 90 seconds. Tighten the clock spring sub-assembly through a counterclockwise motion until it reaches a firm state and follow it with clockwise rotation to align the marks by about 2.5 turns. First install the steering wheel assembly before checking the steering wheel center point while installing the horn button assembly. Safely reconnect the negative battery terminal before following the initialization process and then inspect the horn button assembly along with the SRS warning light.
