2004 Toyota Matrix Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How do you replace the Clock Spring Assembly / Spiral Cable on 2004 Toyota Matrix?
A: The first step to change the Clock Spring Assembly / Clock Spring includes disconnecting the battery negative terminal while following proper safety protocols. Perform these steps by ensuring wheel front alignment before removing the horn button assembly and steering wheel assembly using 09950-50013 special service tools (09951-05010, 09952-05010, 09953-05020, 09954-05021). The next step requires removal of the steering column cover by unscrewing each of its 3 lower screws. The next step involves separating the clock spring sub-assembly by moving the upper cover and disconnecting both the Air Bag connector as well as the connector from the sub-assembly while releasing the 3 claws to detach it. The inspection of the clock spring sub-assembly must confirm that both front wheels remain in their straight ahead position while the turn signal switch maintains neutral alignment. The clock spring sub-assembly must be replaced with a new one when connector scratches or cracks are detected along with signs of dents or chipping or when chipping is present. The turn signal switch pin should remain in neutral position before new connector installation to prevent snapping. Slipping the 3 claws onto the new clock spring sub-assembly allows you to connect the Air Bag connector and install the steering column upper cover. After finishing steer the column cover installation use the 3 screws to secure it. Start the clock spring operation after disconnecting the battery negative terminal for at least 90 seconds when the ignition switch is in off position. Guide the cable clockwise and counterclockwise manually to reach the 2.5-turn point on each side before setting it at the 2.5-turn alignment with the cable marks. The last step includes installation of the steering wheel assembly with the horn button assembly followed by an evaluation of both components and the SRS warning light.
