2003 Toyota Matrix Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the Clock Spring Assembly on 2003 Toyota Matrix?
A: The first step to replace the Clock Spring Assembly requires disconnecting the battery negative terminal following proper safety precautions. Front wheel alignment needs to be straight forward before using Special Service Tool: 09950-50013 (09951-05010, 09952-05010, 09953-05020, 09954-05021) to detach both the horn button assembly and steering wheel assembly. The first step should be removing the lower cover screws from the steering column to expose the cover. The clock spring sub-assembly removal starts with upper cover sliding followed by disconnecting both Air Bag connectors along with connectors from the assembly before unclamping the assembly using the 3 claw mechanism. Test the clock spring sub-assembly for straight front wheel position and check that the turn signal switch remains at position zero. The replacement procedure requires a new connector or clock spring sub-assembly when any detection of scratches, cracks or dents appears while maintaining the turn signal switch in the neutral position to prevent flipping the turn signal switch pin. The 3 claws should be engaged to install the new clock spring sub-assembly followed by reconnection of the Air Bag connector to complete installation by reinstalling the steering column upper cover. Attach the steering column lower cover through installation of its 3 screws. Start operations on the clock spring only when both the ignition switch shows off and the battery terminal disconnect lasts over 90 seconds. Firmly rotate the cable toward the outside until it stops with ease between 2.5 marked turns and then align the marks by rotating the cable in the other direction by 2.5 marked turns. The installation process ends with adding the steering wheel assembly after fitting the horn button assembly while testing both components with their warning lights.
