2004 Toyota Celica Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to remove the timing chain on 2004 Toyota Celica?
A: Starting the timing chain replacement requires the removal of upper front fender apron seal and upper radiator support seal followed by draining engine coolant before taking off the RH front wheel and RH engine under cover. The first step includes taking off the air switching valve before moving on to the drive belt and generator removal for the 2ZZ-GE. The PS pump must be detached from the engine through the following procedure: relocate the PS oil pressure switch connector followed by unfastening two nuts and through bolts and then hanging the pump with a string. The RH engine mounting insulator requires removal by installing a jack under the engine with a wooden block, along with 5 bolts and 2 nuts for 1ZZ-FE and 2ZZ-GE models. The cylinder head cover removal process requires the separation of two nuts, two clips and four ignition coils, together with nine bolts and a gasket for the 1ZZ-FE while for the 2ZZ-GE, one needs to separate the four bolts, ignition coils, and two PCV hoses followed by disconnection of the No.3 ventilation hose before taking off the No.1 ventilation pipe and gasket and finally removing the nine bolts and O-ring. Link the No.1 cylinder to TDC/compression position by pointing the crankshaft pulley groove to timing mark "0" and verifying camshaft timing sprocket mark alignment. Special Service Tool: 09960-10010 (09962-01000, 09963-01000) helps remove crankshaft pulley before unplugging the crankshaft position sensor through removal of its 2 bolts attached to the timing chain cover. The initial sequence in engine disassembly involves eliminating the drive belt tensioner and followed by uninstalling the RH engine mounting bracket (1ZZ-FE needs 3 bolts but 2ZZ-GE needs 4 bolts). Also for the 2ZZ-GE, remove the front exhaust pipe, exhaust manifold stay, and exhaust manifold from the system. The following procedure is for chain tensioner and water pump removal together with 1ZZ-FE timing chain cover removal by unthreading 11 bolts and a nut while utilizing E8 torx wrench socket to extract stud bolt and delicately prying off the cover. The 2ZZ-GE needs the removal of two gaskets and its timing chain cover after unbolting 12 attachments and the stud bolt. Please remove the crank angle sensor plate and chain tensioner slipper before taking off the timing chain and crankshaft timing sprocket. It helps to use two screwdrivers for this operation. The last step involves removing both the chain vibration damper and valve timing control assembly with their attached camshaft timing sprocket yet being cautious not to harm the cylinder head or valve lifter.
