2003 Toyota Celica Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to remove the timing chain on 2003 Toyota Celica?
A: The procedure to remove the timing chain starts with removing two seals namely upper front fender apron and upper radiator support followed by draining engine coolant. Rest the process begins by taking out the front wheel on the right side and engine under cover followed by removing the drive belt and generator. Use a string to suspend the PS pump that you disconnected from the engine by removing its 2 nuts and through bolts after disconnecting the PS oil pressure switch connector. The RH engine mounting insulator must be extracted through jack placement under the engine framework using a wooden block along with bolt removal of 4 pieces and 2 nuts for the 1ZZ-FE model or bolt removal of 5 pieces and 2 nuts for the 2ZZ-GE model. To remove the cylinder head cover on the 1ZZ-FE model one must first detach 4 bolts then disconnect 4 ignition coils and break 2 PCV hoses and finish by taking out 9 bolts and 2 seal washers and 2 nuts along with the cylinder head cover and its gasket. To remove the cylinder head cover from the 2ZZ-GE model use the sequence of steps that starts with four bolt removal followed by ignition coil removal then disconnection of two PCV hoses before you remove two nuts and one bolt and detach the Number 3 ventilation hose and take away the Number 1 ventilation pipe with its gasket and move on to disassembly of nine bolts and the wire harness protector and cylinder head cover with its gasket and O-ring. Correct the Timing of No. 1 Cylinder by positioning the crankshaft pulley groove against "0" mark while achieving proper alignment of the camshaft timing sprocket markings or adjust if necessary by rotating the crankshaft once. Next remove the crankshaft pulley with Special Service Tool: 09213-70010, 09330-00021 and the provided 2 nuts (with collar size 10 mm (0.25 inch)). Optional Special Service Tool: 09950-50013 may also prove useful. Begin the procedure by eliminating power to the crankshaft position sensor from the timing chain cover after unfastening two bolts. Then reach the drive belt tensioner by unscrewing both the bolt and the nut. Remove the chain tensioner (2 nuts) before the water pump while starting with the RH engine mounting bracket (3 bolts for 1ZZ-FE, 4 bolts for 2ZZ-GE). When servicing the 1ZZ-FE timing chain cover requires a torx wrench socket (E8) to remove the stud bolt followed by prying off the cover carefully while you remove 11 bolts and a single nut. You must remove and replace the 12 bolts of the 2ZZ-GE model before using a torx wrench socket (E8) to take out the stud bolt and finally detach the timing chain cover and 2 gaskets. Reposition two screwdrivers to extract the crank angle sensor plate while the bolt from the chain tensioner slipper and timing chain and crankshaft timing sprocket need removal along with some shop rags to avoid damage. Holding the hexagonal head wrench on the camshaft you must remove the bolt to detach the chain vibration damper (2 bolts) together with the valve timing control assembly and camshaft timing sprocket to avoid harming the cylinder head and valve lifter and keeping the valve timing controller assembly whole.
