2002 Toyota Celica Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to service and repair the timing chain on 2002 Toyota Celica?
A: Service and repair of timing chain requires starting with upper front fender apron seal and upper radiator support seal removal followed by engine coolant drain and right-hand front wheel and engine under cover removal. Services start with drive belt and generator removal after disconnection of the power steering pump from the engine through disconnected oil pressure switch connector then removal of nuts and through bolts. Place the pump to the side. The right-hand engine mounting insulator must be removed while supporting the engine with a jack and wood block and then both 1ZZ-FE and 2ZZ-GE engines require the removal of their cylinder head covers along with needed hose and ignition coil removal. To set the No. 1 cylinder at TDC compression position you must position the crankshaft pulley groove at "0" while the camshaft timing sprocket marks should be lined up. Remove the crankshaft pulley through the use of Special Service Tools 09213-70010 and 09330-00021 and two nuts before disconnecting the crankshaft position sensor and removing the drive belt tensioner right-hand engine mounting bracket as well as chain tensioner and water pump. To take out the timing chain cover of 1ZZ-FE you need to remove 11 bolts together with the nut whereas 2ZZ-GE requires 12 bolts removal at the same time as gasket removal. The next step is to eliminate the crank angle sensor plate together with the chain tensioner slipper and timing chain and crankshaft timing sprocket and chain vibration damper and value timing control assembly. The inspection of timing chain components should focus on detecting elongation and wear while checking that maximum chain elongation stays under 122.6 mm (4.827 inch) and both sprockets meet minimum diameter requirements. To replace the crankshaft front oil seal you should utilize Special Service Tool: 09309-37010 and lubricate the oil seal lip using MP grease. Engine oil should be applied to the valve timing controller assembly before procuring specified torque values for timing sprocket bolt tightening and setting alignment of timing marks. Position the chain vibration damper together with timing chain and crankshaft timing sprocket while maintaining correct color link alignment. Put the chain tensioner slipper and crank angle sensor plate in place prior to installing the timing chain cover together with water pump while using seal packing (Part No. 08826-00100 and 08826-00080) as described in installation specifications. Installing the drive belt tensioner along with the right-hand engine mounting bracket and crankshaft position sensor follows by the crankshaft pulley requires torque application according to specified values. Conclude the process by installing the power steering pump and generator and drive belt which should be followed by the right-hand engine under cover and front wheel and finishing by filling the engine with coolant before leak check.
