2001 Toyota Celica Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to remove the timing chain on 2001 Toyota Celica?
A: Start the timing chain removal process by uninstalling upper front fender apron seal and upper radiator support seal followed by draining engine coolant and right-hand front wheel and engine under cover removal. The next step requires removal of the drive belt and generator while engineers disconnect the power steering pump through two nuts and through bolts. The suspended pump must be supported with a string. The timing chain removal process starts with using a jack with a wooden block to remove the right-hand engine mounting insulator while for the 1ZZ-FE model the cylinder head cover requires removal of its bolts followed by ignition coil, PCV hose, and cover gasket detachment. To service the 2ZZ-GE engine according to the similar approach users need to separate ventilation hoses and extract the ventilation pipe and its gasket. First set the No. 1 cylinder to TDC by having the crankshaft pulley groove align with "0" timing mark and ensuring the sprocket marks of the camshaft line up. Special Service Tools comprising 09213-70010, 09330-00021, along with two nuts allow technicians to remove the crankshaft pulley. During the procedure, the technician must also disconnect the crankshaft position sensor and extract the drive belt tensioner, right-hand engine mounting bracket, chain tensioner, and water pump. You must remove all bolts from the timing chain cover and utilize a torx wrench socket of type E8 for the stud bolt for the 1ZZ-FE. The 2ZZ-GE requires the additional components and gasket removal before removing the cover. The service requires technicians to take off the crank angle sensor plate together with the chain tensioner slipper, timing chain and crankshaft timing sprocket, chain vibration damper, and valve timing control assembly that holds the camshaft timing sprocket while making sure to protect the cylinder head from damage. The duration and condition of both timing components must be inspected for proper maintenance before making a replacement decision. The process of replacing oil seals includes using Special Service Tool: 09309-37010 for installation when the timing chain cover is removed or cutting and removing the old seal lip when the cover stays on. Engine oil application needs to precede the assembly of the valve timing controller together with the camshaft timing sprocket before tightening the bolt to its specified torque value. Set the No. 1 cylinder at TDC/compression position then install the chain vibration damper and timing chain followed by the crankshaft timing sprocket while maintaining the correct position of yellow or orange links. The installation requires the chain tensioner slipper and crank angle sensor plate alongside the timing chain cover and water pump. Use seal packing (Part No. 08826-00100 and 08826-00080) per specifications and secure the bolts at their correct torque point. Hydraulic torque tools should be used to tighten the right-hand engine mounting bracket while the drive belt tensioner and crankshaft position sensor and crankshaft pulley need correct tightness according to specifications. After installation of remaining components complete the engine coolant fill-up procedure before starting the engine to inspect for leakage.
