2004 Toyota Camry Parts Questions & Experts Answers
Q: How to overhaul the axle shaft on 2004 Toyota Camry?
A: The first step for front drive shaft overhaul begins with draining the manual transaxle oil from its filler plug and drain plug before applying new gaskets and tightening them to 49 Nm. The automatic transaxle fluid requires draining after removing the drain plug and torquing the new gasket to 49 Nm. Detach the front wheel and front axle hub LH nut using SST 09930-00010 by completely un-staking the parts to prevent drive shaft screw damage. The LH components of both front stabilizer link assembly and speed sensor front assembly require separation with caution directed toward preserving the sensor. Detach the lower No. 1 LH front suspension arm sub-assembly together with the LH tie rod end sub-assembly. A plastic hammer will help uninstall the front drive shaft assembly from the axle hub without harming the drive shaft boot or speed sensor rotor. Remove the central LH front drive shaft assembly while using SST 09520-01010 and 09520-24010 with great care for the transaxle case oil seal. The front drive shaft assembly RH needs removal before applying SST 09608-16042 to fix the front axle hub sub-assembly LH. Assess the LH front drive shaft assembly for boot deterioration and any flexible parts while inspecting it. Disassemble the inboard joint boot from its inboard joint assembly and separate it from the inboard joint boot LH clamp and the inboard joint boot LH No. 2 clamp. Mark the positions without using a punch before disassembling the front drive inboard joint assembly LH. Proceed with outboard joint boot clamp and outboard joint boot removal once the front drive shaft damper LH is eliminated. Follow these steps to install new bearing bracket hole snap ring and front drive shaft bearing by using SST 09527-30010, 09527-10011. Coat the new spline with ATF before assembling it to the front drive shaft assembly LH while positioning the snap ring properly. First install the front drive shaft assembly RH by torquing its bolt to 32 Nm before putting on the front axle assembly LH while being cautious about component damage. Use tools to secure the front suspension arm sub-assembly lower No. 1 LH along with the tie rod end sub-assembly LH by torquing them to 75 Nm and 49 Nm. Connect the front LH speed sensor while advancing the flexible hose to stop foreign contaminants from attaching to the sensor. Fasten the front stabilizer link assembly LH while installing its front axle hub LH nut with 294 Nm torque and perform a staking procedure on the nut. You must install the front wheel before torquing it to 103 Nm to complete this step. During the process you will need to check and inspect manual and automatic transaxle fluids and adjust the front wheel alignment and test the ABS speed sensor signal.
