2004 Toyota 4Runner Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the timing chain on 2004 Toyota 4Runner?
A: The first step to replace the timing chain involves removing power steering link assembly together with the front differential carrier assembly (4WD) and draining engine coolant and oil before battery removal along with the V-bank cover. Starting with the upper radiator support seal involves first detaching the 11 clips and then releasing the fan with fluid coupling and finally removing the fan and generator V belt followed by the fan with fluid coupling. You should detach ventilation hose No. 2 from the vehicle and remove both the air cleaner assembly and the oil level gauge guide with its O-ring. Proceed to remove the water inlet followed by separating the vane pump assembly after disconnecting the P/S oil pressure switch connector and unfastening the 2 bolts while taking care not to hit the pulley against other components. The generator assembly along with the cooler compressor assembly and the V-ribbed belt tensioner assembly require 5 bolt removal for removal purposes. Shrug off the 1st then 2nd idler pulley sub-assemblies before removing the crankshaft pulley through the use of tools Special Service Tool: 09213-54015 (91651-60855), 09330-00021 to secure the pulley and relieve the set bolt until you can remove it with Special Service Tool: 09950-50013 (09951-05010, 09952-05010, 09953-05020, 09954-05030). To disconnect oil pan sub-assembly No. 2 you must first remove 10 bolts and 2 nuts while using Special Service Tool: 09032-00100 to cut off the applied sealer and handle all contact surfaces with care. The technician needs to remove the strainer sub-assembly first before proceeding to separate the oil pan sub-assembly by unfastening 4 housing bolts and the flywheel housing under cover. They should also take out 17 bolts and 2 nuts while gently prying the oil pan from the surface. You need to disconnect two connectors from the camshaft timing oil control valve assembly before removing two bolts and VVT sensor and timing chain or belt cover sub-assembly. Adjust the No.1 cylinder to the top dead center compression position using the crankshaft timing key while both camshaft timing gears should possess their alignment marks. Put on protective goggles and remove the chain tensioner assembly No. 1 without crankshaft rotation while engaging the plunger and securing the stopper plate with a 3.5 mm bar before removing the 2 bolts. The next step requires removal of chain tensioner slipper and idle gear No. 1 using a 10 mm hexagon wrench together with chain vibration damper No. 2 until the chain sub-assembly can be removed. The chain tensioner slipper together with assembly No. 1 require installation while following correct alignment while meeting torque requirements. Correctly position marks on the chain components before installing chain vibration damper No. 2, the idle gear No. 1 along with necessary lubrication, then tighten the idle gear shaft No. 2. Use Special Service Tool: 09226-10010 to install the timing gear case or timing chain case oil seal followed by the timing chain or belt cover sub-assembly and VVT sensor and the camshaft timing oil control valve assembly with specified torque requirements. The technician should reinstall the cylinder head covers together with the ignition coil assembly as well as the intake air surge tank. To perform the oil pan sub-assembly installation, remove previous packing while using new sealing material (Part No. 08826-00080 or equivalent) during the designated time period and perform equal bolt tightening. First install the oil strainer sub-assembly using a new gasket before adding oil pan sub-assembly No. 2 with correct seal packing treatment. Install the crankshaft pulley with tool 09213-54015 (91651-60855) and 09330-00021 and torque the set bolt to its specified value. Insert sub-assemblies No. 1 and No. 2 idler pulley together with the V-ribbed belt tensioner assembly and cooler compressor assembly and generator assembly and vane pump assembly according to their specified torque settings. The installer should connect the P/S oil pressure switch connector followed by installation of the water inlet piece and the oil level gauge guide with a new O-ring and air cleaner assembly. Install Hose No. 2 ventilation then place the fan together with fluid coupling and V belt generator before performing a complete fan tightening. Place the upper radiator support seal back, replace the battery and front differential carrier assembly for four-wheel-drive and power steering link assembly. The last installation step involves checking for leaks followed by a proper torque installation of the V-bank cover while performing an ignition timing inspection using Special Service Tool: 09843-18040.
