2005 Toyota 4Runner Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the timing chain sub-assembly on 2005 Toyota 4Runner?
A: The proper replacement process for the timing chain sub-assembly starts with power steering link assembly and differential carrier assembly front (4WD drive type) removal followed by engine coolant and oil drainage and battery extraction alongside V-bank cover, radiator support seal upper, and 11 clips. Begin the fan replacement process by loosening the fan connected via fluid coupling and removing both the fan and generator V belt and finally detach the fan with fluid coupling. The process to replace the oil level gauge guide requires disconnecting ventilation hose No.2 followed by removal of the air cleaner assembly and the removal of the oil level gauge together with its bolt and O-ring. The water inlet needs removal before proceeding to disconnect the P/S oil pressure switch connector while detaching 2 bolts that must not contact any component during removal. The maintenance sequence proceeds by disassembling the generator assembly and cooler compressor assembly along with V-ribbed belt tensioner assembly after bolt removal while taking out the both idler pulley sub-assemblies. To remove the crankshaft pulley employ Special Service Tools 09213-54015 (91651-60855), 09330-00021 to anchor the pulley while setting loose its bolt before extracting the pulley and bolt with tools 09950-50013 (09951-05010, 09952-05010, 09953-05020, 09954-05030). Use Special Service Tool: 09032-00100 to cut the sealer on the oil pan sub-assembly No.2 while taking out 10 bolts, 2 nuts and prioritize contact surface protection. After removing the oil strainer assembly you must proceed to remove the oil pan assembly paying attention to the cylinder block surfaces. Separate the vehicle by disconnecting two electrical connectors while removing two mounting bolts from the intake air surge tank and ignition coil assembly with cylinder head cover sub-assemblies then camshaft timing oil control valve assembly. The technician should remove the VVT sensor along with the timing chain or belt cover assembly and finally take out the timing gear case and timing chain case oil seal. Align the crankshaft set key with the timing line of the cylinder block to achieve TDC/compression in No. 1 cylinder position followed by a check of camshaft timing gear alignment. Perform this step only while maintaining the crankshaft stationary and eliminate chain tensioner assembly No.1 before extracting the chain tensioner slipper and idle gear No.1 and chain vibration damper No.2. Install the chain tensioner slipper and chain tensioner assembly No.1 while maintaining proper alignment before tightening it according to specifications. Proceed with the installation of the chain sub-assembly during which you must synchronize the timing marks before adding the chain vibration damper No.2 then idle gear No.1 and the timing gear case or timing chain case oil seal with Special Service Tool: 09226-10010. After installation of the timing chain or belt cover sub-assembly and VVT sensor and camshaft timing oil control valve assembly the technician must torque the bolts to specified values. Place the cylinder head cover sub-assemblies along with an ignition coil assembly and an intake air surge tank back into position. Apply new gaskets on the oil strainer sub-assembly before installation while maintaining correct torque for the oil pan sub-assembly with its proper seal packing used. Reinstall the oil pan sub-assembly number two by properly applying seal packing and torqueing to specified values. The crankshaft pulley installation requires the use of three Special Service Tools including 09213-54015 (91651-60855), 09330-00021, and needs to be torqued according to specifications. The next sequence includes the installation of idler pulley sub-assemblies and V-ribbed belt tensioner assembly, cooler compressor assembly, generator assembly, and vane pump assembly with correct torque recommendations. After reconnecting the P/S oil pressure switch connecter you must add the water inlet followed by the oil level gauge guide with its new O-ring before installing the air cleaner assembly. The service technician connects ventilation hose number two then installs the fan through fluid coupling coupled with generator V belt before fully tightening the coupling. Position first the radiator support seal upper, followed by the battery and differential carrier assembly front for (4WD drive type) units and power steering link assembly. Measuring engine oil and coolant levels follows along with leak inspection until installation of the V-bank cover is complete with correct torque requirements. Conduct an inspection of ignition timing by using Special Service Tool: 09843-18040.
