2003 Toyota 4Runner Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the timing chain on 2003 Toyota 4Runner?
A: The process of timing chain replacement begins when you remove the power steering link assembly, front differential carrier assembly (4WD), drain engine coolant and oil along with removing the battery. Proceed to unfasten the V-bank cover along with the upper radiator support seal by removing 11 clips. After opening the fan with its fluid coupling functionality users should detach the fan and generator V belt and complete the removal process by taking off the fan together with its coupling mechanism. Begin cleaning ventilation hose No. 2 then remove the air cleaner assembly followed by taking out the oil level gauge guide with its O-ring and guide. The vane pump assembly requires removal of two bolts and disconnection of the P/S oil pressure switch connector before separating from the water inlet along with avoiding damage to any pulley parts. All five bolts need removal to separate the generator assembly from the V-ribbed belt tensioner assembly together with the cooler compressor assembly. The technician proceeds by first removing idler pulley sub-assemblies No. 2 and No. 1 before taking out the crankshaft pulley through the use of Special Service Tools 09213-54015 (91651-60855) and 09330-00021 to hold the pulley then 09950-50013 (09951-05010, 09952-05010, 09953-05020, 09954-05030) to loosen and remove the pulley set bolt. Remove oil pan sub-assembly No. 2 by removing 10 bolts alongside 2 nuts while using Special Service Tool: 09032-00100 to safely cut the sealer application and avoid damaging the contact areas. The repair can begin with oil strainer sub-assembly removal followed by oil pan sub-assembly removal of four housing bolts and the flywheel housing under cover and finally 17 bolts and 2 nuts which permit prying the oil pan free from the cylinder block without surface damage. Unplug two connectors before extracting the intake air surge tank and ignition coil assembly, cylinder head cover sub-assembly and camshaft timing oil control valve assembly using two bolts. After removing the VVT sensor and timing chain or belt cover sub-assembly set No. 1 cylinder to TDC/compression by using the crankshaft set key to line up with the timing line along with correct alignment of camshaft timing gears. When fixing the stopper plate secure the assembly position. Remove chain tensioner assembly No. 1 without rotating the crankshaft and do so without the tensioner present. First remove the parts which include chain tensioner slipper and idle gear No. 1 with a 10 mm hexagon wrench along with chain vibration damper No. 2. The assembly begins with chain tensioner slipper and chain tensioner assembly No. 1 installation after removing the sub-assembly chain. Ensure the proper torque and alignment during the process. The chain sub-assembly installation requires the marks to be aligned before inserting chain vibration damper No. 2 followed by idling gear No. 1 installation with specific torque values and oil application. Theetermine uses Special Service Tool: 09226-10010 to install the timing gear case or timing chain case oil seal before continuing with the timing chain or belt cover sub-assembly, VVT sensor, and camshaft timing oil control valve assembly installation. Place the cylinder head covers alongside the ignition coil assembly as well as the intake air surge tank back on. Install the oil pan sub-assembly and use new Part No. 08826-00080 or equivalent seal packing while torquing all bolts and nuts equally. The service begins with installing the oil strainer sub-assembly while adding a new gasket before proceeding to oil pan sub-assembly No. 2 with its specified seal packing and torque requirements. Use Special Service Tool 09213-54015 (91651-60855), 09330-00021 to reinstall the crankshaft pulley before torquing the pulley set bolt to specifications. The service technician should first tighten idler pulley sub-assemblies No. 1 and No. 2 according to specifications then install the V-ribbed belt tensioner assembly. The service technician should put back the cooler compressor assembly and generator assembly as well as vane pump assembly while tightening all connections and checking the appropriate torque. The procedure requires installation of the water inlet while using a new O-ring to guide the oil level gauge and the assembly of the air cleaner. Position ventilation hose No. 2 and then install the fan through the fluid coupling and generator V belt before full tightening of the fan component. Reinstall the radiator support seal upper together with battery and front differential carrier assembly (4WD) and power steering link assembly. As the last step of the repair add the oil and coolant then verify for leaks before using Special Service Tool: 09843-18040 for ignition timing inspection and installing the V-bank cover using the appropriate torque settings.
