  • Q: How to service and repair the heater core on 2004 Scion xA?
A: Service and repair requirements for the heater core begin with refrigerant discharge using Special Service Tool: 09870-00015 07110-58060 and its variants 07117-58080, 07117-58090, 07117-78050, 07117-88060, 07117-88070, 07117-88080. Disconnection of the suction hose sub assembly and liquid tube sub assembly A requires Special Service Tool: 09870-00025. You should disconnect both heater water inlet hose A and heater water outlet hose A by carefully pulling the claw of their clips with pliers and then sliding them off. First disconnect the instrument panel sub assy w/passenger Air Bag assy and then proceed with removing the instrument panel sub assy lower w/heater duct along with the ECM and air conditioning blower assy and air conditioning amplifier assy and defroster nozzle assy using removal of the clip and 2 claw disengagement procedures. The instrument panel brace sub assy No.1 requires wire harness detaching before removal of 4 bolts and a single nut. Separate the outer cable lines of the defroster damper control cable sub assy and airmix damper control cable sub assy before disconnecting their inner cables. Perform a similar process of removal for air duct rear No.2 and air duct rear No.1 respectively. The heater radiator assy can be removed through three connector disconnections and one bolt removal followed by two nut removals. First disconnect 4 claws to remove the air duct assembly then remove the heater cover by removing one screw and releasing its two claws. Move to step one where you detach the thermistor assy after releasing its claw and unclipping its clamp and then move to step two which involves heater radiator unit sub assembly removal through the process of unscrewing five fasteners and one screw and unclipping one bracket and connector. Secure the defroster damper control cable sub assy while positioning the arm in FACE position and connecting the inner cable end to the control lever before securing the outer cable in the cable clamp without wire bending. After completing the same procedure for the airmix damper control cable sub assy apply its arm to the MAX.COOL position. The service technician should terminate their work by reinstalling the ECM together with the instrument panel sub assy lower w/heater duct as well as the instrument panel sub assy w/passenger Air Bag assy. The service technician should also install the liquid tube sub assy A and suction hose sub assy before adding coolant and charging the refrigerant using Special Service Tool: 07110-58060 (07117-58060, 07117-58070, 07117-58080, 07117-58090, 07117-78050, 07117-88060, 07117-88070 Check the engine coolant for leaks and power up the engine before inspecting refrigerant leakage.
