2003 Toyota Tacoma Parts Questions & Experts Answers
Q: How to Service and Repair a Wheel Hub on 2003 Toyota Tacoma?
A: You can start servicing and repairing the wheel hub by performing component disassembly. When servicing axles in 4WD vehicles you should clamp the hub using a soft jaw vise then use a screwdriver to remove the inside oil seal. You need to clamp the axle hub of Pre runner models while using a screwdriver to remove their grease cap. Replace the lock nut stake on Pre runner models with a hammer and chisel before extracting it and removing the ABS speed sensor rotor along with its spacer using Special Service Tool: 09318-12010. Be careful to avoid damaging the speed sensor rotor serration. You must first detach the axle hub because you need to remove the four bolts while moving the dust cover open towards the hub side and use Special Service Tool: 09710-30021 (09710-03051), 09950-40011 (09951-04020, 09952-04010, 09953-04020, 09954-04010, 09955-04031, 09957-04010, 09958-04011) to complete this step. The dust cover should be removed together with the 4WD bearing spacer and ABS speed sensor rotor/spacer. Remove the outside steering knuckle oil seal with a screwdriver before extracting the bearing from the knuckle using Special Service Tool: 09950-60020 (09951-00810), 09950-70010 (09951-07150) and a press together with snap ring pliers to remove the snap ring. A press combination of Special Service Tool: 09527-17011 and 09950-60020 (09951-00910) helps install the new bearing which must be followed by snap ring installation. Affix a new oil seal (outside) using Special Service Tool: 09223-15030, 09527-17011 and this tool with a plastic hammer while applying MP grease to the lip of the oil seal. The steering knuckle requires installation of its axle hub through the use of a press combined with Special Service Tool: 09649-17010. After 4 bolts securing the dust cover to the knuckle reach a torque of 18 Nm (185 kgf-cm, 13 ft. lbs.). When installing the ABS speed sensor rotor/spacer maintain the serration free from scratches. Place a new lock nut into Pre runner models through Special Service Tool: 09318-12010, torque to 274 Nm (2,800 kgf-cm, 203 ft. lbs.) using a chisel and hammer for staking it. Begin with the 09950-60010 (09951-00650) and 09950-70010 (09951-07150) special service tools along with a press to fit the bearing spacer followed by the new oil seal (inside) using Special Service Tool: 09527-17011 while using a plastic hammer to evenly strike the tool on its circumference and apply MP grease on the lip of the seal. Pre Runner models need the grease cap to be installed at the end of installation.
