2003 Toyota Tacoma Brake Caliper Parts Q&A
Q: How to service and repair the brake caliper on 2003 Toyota Tacoma?
A: The brake caliper service requires you to start by taking it apart and inserting cloth between the piston and caliper before using compressed air to remove the piston and cylinder boot while maintaining finger safety in front of the piston. Afterward install the sliding bushing and pin boot securely into the caliper grooves of the torque plate by following their installation. The pad lining should be measured using a ruler; replace when the thickness falls below 1.0 mm (0.039 inch) and standard thickness is 12.0 mm (0.472 inch). The disc thickness needs measurement with a micrometer before deciding if replacement is needed because of scoring or minimum thickness level below 20.0 mm (0.787 inch) or standard 22.0 mm (0.866 inch). The disc runout should be measured using a dial indicator positioned 10 mm (0.39 inch) from the disc outer edge with a maximum permissible runout value set at 0.07 mm (0.0028 inch). Disc replacement or disc grinding on a "On-Car" brake lathe is required if the runout exceeds this limit and the front hub bearing play must be within specification before any measurement process begins. The replacement process begins by removing the torque plate from the knuckle then the axle hub and final step consists of taking off the affected disc from the axle hub. After that, install a fresh disc before tightening bolts to 64 Nm (650 kgf-cm, 47 ft. lbs.) while reinstalling the axle hub to readjust front bearing preload and reattach the torque plate to the knuckle with 108 Nm (1,100 kgf-cm, 80 ft. lbs.) torque. Follow-up procedures of assembly commence by applying lithium soap base glycol grease to designated areas.
