2003 Toyota Tacoma Shock Absorber Parts Q&A
Q: How to service and repair a shock absorber on 2003 Toyota Tacoma?
A: Service and repair of the shock absorber begins with suspension support removal followed by the coil spring removal. Apply Special Service Tool: 09727-30021 to compress the coil spring until it shows clearance on both ends of the tool arms which will create enough space for an 8-roll coil while preventing excessive compression and the use of impact wrenches to avoid damage. The service begins with removing the suspension support center nut until the 3 retainers, 2 cushions, suspension support and coil spring are free. To evaluate shock absorbers check for unusual sound production and resistance using rod compression and extension movements before deciding to replace the unit when any problems are discovered. Before disposal extend the shock absorber rod until full extension while combining rod drilling with cylinder hole creation to emit gas contents from inside the cylinder by avoiding radio-frequency damage from exposed flying chips. Use Special Service Tool: 09506-35010, 09632-36010 and the press to remove the bushing before press-install a new bushing but do not add any grease or oil during installation. Use Special Service Tool: 09727-30021 to compress the coil spring before positioning its lower end into the spring seat gap of the shock absorber. Afterward, install the 2 cushions and 3 retainers and suspension support to the rod. The mechanic should install a new suspension support center nut with moderate tension, adjust the suspension support alignment by making a 2-bolt line parallel to the lower bushing axis, then remove the Special Service Tool: 09727-30021 and repeat the alignment check. Finally, torque the suspension center nut to 29 Nm (300 kgf-cm, 22 ft. lbs.).
