2003 Toyota Sequoia Parts Questions & Experts Answers
Q: How to service and repair the wheel hub on 2003 Toyota Sequoia?
A: Service and repair operations for the wheel hub start with component disassembly. Sequence 2WD repairs by first removing the grease cap by putting the axle hub inside a soft jaw vise then using a screwdriver to handle the operation. Remove the oil seal (inside) of the 4WD using the same approach as the other components. The service requires a chisel and hammer to unstake 2WD lock nut parts before using Special Service Tool: 09318-12010 to remove both the lock nut and speed sensor rotor without damaging the serration. Remove the axle hub from the steering knuckle by detaching its 4 bolts and moving the dust cover followed by Special Service Tool: 09710-30021 (09710-03051), 09950-40011 (09951-04020, 09952-04010, 09953-04020, 09954-04010, 09955-04031, 09957-04010, 09958-04011). Begin by sliding off the dust cover together with the bearing spacer when using 4WD and do so without creating any scratches on the rotor's serration pattern. Extract the bearing from the steering knuckle through the process of removing the outside oil seal with a screwdriver and using snap ring pliers to remove the snap ring while employing Special Service Tool: 09950-60020 (09951-00810), 09950-70010 (09951-07150) with a press. To reassemble the component install the new bearing using Special Service Tool 09527-17011 and 09950-0020 (09951-00910) and a press as well as new snap ring installed with snap ring pliers. Use the combination of Special Service Tool: 09223-15030, 09527-17011 along with a plastic hammer to install a new oil seal (outside) into its housing by applying MP grease on the lip of the oil seal. Insert the axle hub with the dust cover onto the steering knuckle by tightening 4 bolts to 18 Nm (185 kgf-cm, 13 ft. lbs.) torque while using Special Service Tool: 09649-17010 and press. Install the speed sensor rotor by paying attention to its serration to avoid damage. The 2WD lock nut installation requires the use of Special Service Tool: 09318-12010 to torque up to 274 Nm (2,800 kgf-cm) before staking the nut with a hammer and chisel. The installation of the bearing spacer for 4WD requires Special Service Tools 09950-60010 (09951-00650), 09950-70010 (09951-07150) together with a press. To finish the 2WD installation fit the grease cap whereas 4WD requires the installation of a new oil seal (inside) achieved with Special Service Tool: 09527-17011 and a plastic hammer after applying MP grease to the lip.
