2003 Toyota Sequoia Parts Questions & Experts Answers
Q: How to service and repair the parking brake shoe on 2003 Toyota Sequoia?
A: Start your work on the parking brake shoe after you detach the rear wheel using 110 Nm (1,150 kgf-cm, 83 ft. lbs. torque). The rear disc brake assembly needs removal by unbolting the 2 mounting screws which require a torque amount of 105 Nm. Afterwards secure the assembly in position to prevent hose stretching. Executing the parking brake lever first enables you to place matchmarks on disc and rear axle hub before disc removal; troublesome disc removal requires shoe adjustment to achieve wheel freeness. Shortly after removing 2 shoe return springs using needle-nose pliers you can detach the shoe strut with spring while keeping the spring oriented in the forward direction when reassembling. To remove the shoe adjuster from the front shoe use slide motions then separate the anchor and tension springs from the front shoe with needle-nose pliers before taking out the shoe while stabilizing the cup with a clip remover. The process for the rear shoe includes disconnecting the parking brake cable from the parking brake shoe lever. As a standard, the brake shoe lining must measure 4.0 mm (0.157 inch) yet should remain at least 1.0 mm (0.039 inch) and receive replacement if it fails to meet these measurements. The disc inside diameter requires measurement at 210 mm (8.27 inch) standard yet should not exceed 211 mm (8.31 inch). Replace or perform grinding on any scored or uneven worn discs. Use disc surface chalk to check the alignment between parking brake shoe lining and disc then perform necessary grinding of the lining. Check the parking brake shoe lever clearance using a feeler gauge while making sure it is less than 0.25 millimeters (0.010 inch). Replace the shim if measurement results are out of specification range. High-temperature grease serves as the main assembly adhesive for defined parts during reassembly operations. To perform the shoe clearance adjustment install three hub nuts temporarily until the disc locks while expanding the shoes before turning the adjuster eight notches back. End this procedure by pressing the parking brake pedal with a force of 147 N (15 kgf, 33 lbs) while driving at 50 km/h (31 mph) for a distance of 400 meters (0.25 mile). This test must be performed 2 or 3 times until you check and make adjustments to the parking brake pedal travel when necessary.
