2003 Toyota Sequoia Parts Questions & Experts Answers
Q: How to remove and install the Rack And Pinion on 2003 Toyota Sequoia?
A: The first step for removing the rack and pinion requires you to straighten the front wheels and take away the steering wheel pad and wheel. The procedure to remove the rack and pinion starts by disconnecting the RH and LH tie rod ends before removing the bolt from the No. 2 intermediate shaft assembly together with the clamp plate. Disconnect the pressure feed and return tubes by using Special Service Tool: 09023-12700. The Rack And Pinion assembly can be taken out when the technician eliminates the bracket bolt along with nut and stud bolt before removing the two set bolts and nut with washer. Then remove the bracket followed by the grommet from the system. Installation begins with insertion of the grommet and bracket followed by the Rack And Pinion assembly where Rack And Pinion assembly set bolt "A" requires 165 Nm (1,700 kgf-cm, 123 ft. lbs.) torque while Rack And Pinion assembly set bolt "B" together with washer and nut "B" needs 130 Nm (1,350 kgf-cm, 96 ft. lbs.) torque and both stud bolt "C" and bolt "D" and nut "D" require 165 Nm (1,700 kgf-cm, 123 ft. lbs.). At first use Special Service Tool: 09023-12700 to connect pressure feed and return tubes before torquing them to 22 Nm (227 kgf-cm, 16 ft. lbs.). Then connect the clamp plate and install the bolt with a torque of 29 Nm (290 kgf-cm, 21 ft. lbs.). Connect the number two intermediate shaft and RH and LH tie rod ends while setting the front wheels straight ahead using a jacked-up vehicle. First center the spiral cable before installing the steering wheel by matching its wheel mark with the steering column main shaft. Secure the wheel set nut loosely and attach the connector. The power steering bleeding process should be completed along with accurate steering wheel center point inspection and proper torque application on the steering wheel set nut to 50 Nm (510 kgf-cm, 37 ft. lbs.). Install the steering wheel pad before doing a front wheel alignment check and performing an alignment calibration on steering angle and master cylinder pressure and yaw rate and deceleration sensors.
