2003 Toyota MR2 Spyder Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to service and repair the radiator on 2003 Toyota MR2 Spyder?
A: A beginning start for radiator servicing includes removing both the drain plug and O-ring. Use Special Service Tool: 09230-01010 by connecting its claw section to an overhaul handle then adjusting the stopper bolts to reach dimension "B" between 0.2 and 0.3 mm (0.008 - 0.012 inch) while protecting the claw from harm. Squeeze the handle of the tool until the stopper bolts stop its progress to uncaulk the lock plates. A soft-faced hammer should conduct light taps to remove both tanks and O-rings from the radiator bracket. You must inspect the lock plate for damage while checking that deformed sides of the groove need correction using pliers to prevent water leaks through the groove bottom. Radiator cores must be replaced after two caulkings or changing the core becomes necessary. To reassemble the unit install new tanks and O-rings before checking that no foreign matter exists in the lock plate groove and that the O-ring is untwisted. Strike the lock plate gently with a hammer that has a soft-face pad to remove any remaining space. Place Special Service Tool 09230-01010 and 09231-14010 on the punch assembly before integrating it to the overhaul handle then set the stopper bolt to reach dimension "B" of 8.4 mm (0.331 inch). To caulk the lock plate correctly apply the tool against its surface and squeeze the handle until the tool stops moving while carefully avoiding the pipes and brackets. Check the lock plate height (H) before and after caulk as it should range from 7.4 to 7.8 mm (0.2913 to 0.3071 inches) and maintain readjustment if necessary. Apply a new O-ring onto the drain plug before putting on the drain plug itself. The drain plug leak test process takes place during this step after drain plug tightening and engine coolant reservoir placement. Special Service Tool: 09230-01010 is used to plug inlet and outlet pipes following the radiator cap tester pressure application at 177 kPa (1.8 kgf/cm2, 26 psi). Radiator water submersion includes swishing it to eliminate fake leak indications.
