2003 Toyota MR2 Spyder Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to service the thermostat on 2003 Toyota MR2 Spyder?
A: The servicing process starts with draining the engine coolant before proceeding to remove the drive belt and generator and front engine under cover. Begin by removing two nuts from the cylinder block water inlet to disconnect it for thermostat extraction including its gasket removal. The inspection of the thermostat requires water immersion with slow heat application until the valve opening temperature reaches 80 - 84 degrees Celsius (176 - 183.2 degrees Fahrenheit); if the calibration is incorrect replace the device. A new thermostat should be installed when these specifications fail to be met during testing at 90 degrees CelsiusC (194 degrees Fahrenheit) for 10 mm (0.39 inch) valve lift or when the valve does not fully close beneath 40 degrees Celsius (104 degrees Fahrenheit). Position the thermostat in the cylinder block by placing a new gasket and directing the jiggle valve upward with tolerance between 10 degrees of the target location. Replace the water inlet by tightening its two nuts to 9 Nm torque followed by reinstallation of the front engine under cover and generator with the drive belt. The process includes engine coolant addition after starting the motor while checking for leaks by inspecting engine coolant levels.
