2003 Toyota MR2 Spyder Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to service and repair the water pump on 2003 Toyota MR2 Spyder?
A: Engine coolant drainage followed by drive belt removal constitutes the first stage when repairing the water pump. Follow by removing the water pump with six bolts which also includes the pump and gasket while cleaning the engine coolant from the water chamber room. The replacement process of a water pump should be conducted without removing either the RH engine mounting bracket or generator from the system. A visual inspection of the water pump drain hole should be performed to check for coolant leakage; when leakage occurs the water pump must be replaced. The installation of the water pump requires installing a new O-ring on the timing chain cover and then using the 6 bolts to secure the water pump while torquing Bolt A to 9 Nm (92 kgf-cm, 80 inch lbs.) and Bolt B to 11 Nm (113 kgf-cm, 8 ft. lbs.), following the bolt lengths shown on the illustration. Following water pump installation, proceed in reinstalling the drive belt and filling the system with engine coolant before starting the engine to check for leaks and finally recheck engine coolant level.
