2003 Toyota Land Cruiser Parts Questions & Experts Answers
Q: How to service and repair the brake caliper on 2003 Toyota Land Cruiser?
A: The brake caliper service requires starting with the removal of 4-cylinder boot set rings and cylinder boots using a screwdriver. Place a wooden plate in between the piston and insert a pad piece on one side while using compressed air to draw out the piston from the cylinder with caution against touching the piston. You can remove the 4 cylinder-mounted piston seals from their location through the use of a screwdriver. When inspecting the pads measure their lining thickness with a ruler but maintain replacement when it reaches 1.0 mm (0.39 inch) minimum or presents uneven wear. Use a micrometer to check the disc thickness which must be 32.0 mm (1.260 inch) or greater but not less than minimum 30.0 mm (1.181 inch) or have scored or uneven wearing. The maximum disc runout limit stands at 0.07 mm (0.0028 inch) when measured at a position 10 mm (0.39 inch) from the outside edge using a dial indicator; normal bearing play and axle hub runout will lead to replacement of the disc or grinding it on an "On-Car brake lathe." You should first remove the front axle hub and detach the disc from it. Install a brand new disc before tightening the 5 bolts and putting back the axle hub for bearing preload adjustment. Reassembly procedures perform in the exact reverse order of the disassembly process while using lithium soap base glycol grease on designated components.
