2003 Toyota Echo Parts Questions & Experts Answers
Q: How to service and repair the rear wheel speed sensor on 2003 Toyota Echo?
A: Service and repair of the rear wheel speed sensor begin with wheel removal followed by disconnecting its speed sensor connector. The steps begin with removing the speed sensor with its attached rear axle hub and this is followed by extracting the ABS speed sensor after driving out its 2 pins and using Special Service Tool: 09520-00031 (09520-00040, 09521-00020) to detach the 2 attachments. The axle hub assembly requires mounting in a soft jaw vise before dropping or subjecting to strong shock forces but needs installation of a new assembly after any interaction. Members should remove the ABS speed sensor by using Special Service Tools: 09520-00031 (09520-00040, 09521-00020) and 09950-00020 along with 2 bolts (Diameter: 12 mm, Pitch: 1.5 mm) while maintaining sensor rotor cleanliness and straight sensor extraction to protect components from damage. When the sensor rotor damaged the axle hub assembly must be replaced while you must prevent damaging the contact surfaces between the axle hub and speed sensor. The contacting surface of axle hub and new ABS speed sensor requires proper cleaning before installation while the sensor rotor must remain free of objects. The ABS speed sensor should be placed on the axle hub so its connector faces down while using Special Service Tool: 09214-76011 and a press to mount the new sensor while maintaining a direct hammer-free installation and performing a constant slow pressing movement. Install the rear wheel after connecting the speed sensor connector and sliding the speed sensor onto the rear axle hub while torquing it to 103 Nm (1,050 kgf-cm, 76 ft. lbs.). Verify the speed sensor signal as the final step.
