    Q:
How to service and repair the rear speed sensor on Toyota RAV4? Posted by Customer
    A:
Begin rear speed sensor repair by disconnecting its connector from under the seat cushion and trim panel before detaching the connector. Remove the harness from the body and suspension arm by unscrewing 3 clamp bolts and tightening them to specific torque values. To service 2WD systems take off the speed sensor and axle hub while for 4WD remove the bolt and sensor from the axle carrier and tighten them to 8.0 Nm (82 kgf-cm, 71 inch lbs.). For 2WD disassembly you must apply a pin punch to push out the two pins and detach the two components from Special Service Tool: 09520-00031 (09520-00040, 09521-00020) before mounting the axle hub assembly in a soft jaw vise. Replace any dropped or strongly shocked components. Use Special Service Tool 09520-00031 (09520-00040, 09521-00020), 09950-00020 along with 2 bolts to remove the ABS speed sensor. Keep the sensor rotor clean and avoid damaging the sensor during extraction. To install the new ABS speed sensor you must first clean the sensor surface of the axle hub. Place the sensor on the hub bottom side facing down. Use Special Service Tools 09527-10011, 09710-04101, 09950-60020 (09951-00680) with a press to secure the sensor. Do not hit the sensor with a hammer directly and examine the detection portion for foreign particles. The reverse steps of installation complete the process next. Test the speed sensor output afterward.
