2003 Toyota Echo Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to Remove and Install the Rack and Pinion in a Steering Gear System on 2003 Toyota Echo?
A: The first step to remove the rack and pinion includes placing the front wheels in a perfectly straight position before removing the steering wheel pad along with the wheel itself. You should start by removing the RH and LH engine under covers but before that disconnect the RH and LH tie rod ends while also taking off the No. 2 column hole cover. Disconnect the sliding yoke as well as pressure feed and return tubes by using Special Service Tool: 09023-12900. You must then remove the tube clamp bolt. Utilize the engine sling device to mount onto engine hangers by installing No. 1 engine hanger: 12281-21010 together with bolt: 91511-60818 until they reach a torque of 20 Nm (200 kgf-cm, 14 ft. lbs.). Divide the lower suspension arm from the steering knuckle and the engine rear mount insulator and front suspension member using a bolt removal and two nuts removal procedure. The front suspension member along with its lower suspension arm requires a transmission jack to support it before removing all 4 bolts from these assemblies. One should begin by removing the stabilizer bar before moving on to the bolt of the rack housing heat insulator and the 2 bolts which allows access to both the rack housing heat insulator and the dynamic damper before finishing with the column hole cover sub-assembly and the 4 bolts and nuts from the PS rack and pinion assembly. The bracket and grommet should be removed from the PS rack and pinion assembly before you place matchmarks on the No. 3 intermediate shaft assembly and control valve shaft. Then remove the bolt and No. 3 intermediate shaft assembly. You must begin the installation by screwing the 3 engine rear mount bracket bolts to 49 Nm torque before attaching the engine rear mount insulator with its through bolt to the No. 2 engine rear mount bracket and torquing it to 64 Nm. The front-facing inscribed mark on the bracket guides the attachment of the grommet and bracket assembly to the PS rack and pinion assembly. After alignment of matchmarks between intermediate shaft assembly and control valve shaft. Install the intermediate shaft assembly using the bolt which gets torqued to 28 Nm (290 kgf-cm, 21 ft. lbs.). The front suspension member gets the PS rack and pinion assembly installed using four bolts and nuts that need 74 Nm (750 kgf-cm, 54 ft. lbs.) torque. Subsequently the column hole cover sub-assembly along with dynamic damper and rack housing heat insulator receive two bolts with 18 Nm (180 kgf-cm, 13 ft. lbs.) torque and aging follows by insulator bolt torque to 35 Nm (360 kgf-cm, 26 ft. lbs.) and stabilizer bar attachment. Place holes from the front suspension member and body in proper alignment using Special Service Tool: 09670-00010, followed by installing the front suspension member with lower suspension arm and PS rack and pinion assembly through 4 bolts while torquing Bolt A to 116 Nm (1,180 kgf-cm, 85 ft. lbs.) and Bolt B to 70 Nm (715 kgf-cm, 52 ft. lbs.). Linking the engine rear mount insulator with the front suspension member through the bolt and two nuts reaching a torque level of 80 Nm (810 kgf-cm, 59 ft. lbs.) and install the lower suspension arm to the steering knuckle. Take off the engine sling device from the engine hangers before removing both No. 1 engine hangers to put in the engine hood. Apply 7.8 Nm (80 kgf-cm, 69 inch lbs.) torque to the tube clamp bolt after you connect the pressure feed tube to the return tube through Special Service Tool: 09023-12900 and use the tube clamp bolt. Use Special Service Tool: 09023-12900 to connect pressure feed and return tubes which need torquing up to 27 Nm (280 kgf-cm, 20 ft. lbs.). Attach the return hose with its clip followed by the column hole cover assembly. Connect the sliding yoke while installing the No. 2 column hole cover before attaching the RH and LH tie rod ends and the RH and LH engine under covers. Guide the front wheels to face forward before you properly position the spiral cable and add the steering wheel with a temporary nut lock. Use matchmarks to align the steering wheel to the steering column main shaft before the initial tightness. The power steering system should be bled first before checking the steering wheel position, steering wheel set nut torquing to 50 Nm (510 kgf-cm, 37 ft. lbs.), pad installation on the steering wheel, followed by wheel alignment assessment.
