2003 Toyota Echo Power Steering Pump Parts Q&A

  • Q: How to service and repair the power steering pump on 2003 Toyota Echo?
A: Starting by removing the RH engine under cover and the oil reservoir tank cover constitutes the first stage of power steering pump servicing and repairing operations. To disconnect the return hose cut off the retaining clip while watching for any fluid that could squeeze onto the drive belt. For disconnecting the pressure feed tube and oil pressure sensor connector you need Special Service Tool: 09023-12700. Begin by loosening bolt A and bolt B to detach the drive belt before removing the PS vane pump assembly through bolt removal of B, C, and the adjusting strut with just enough bolt A looseness to extract the assembly from its position. Temporary installation of bolt A guides the PS vane pump assembly until bolt C permits installing the adjusting strut with a torque of 44 Nm (440 kgf-cm, 32 ft. lbs.). Then fit bolt B for overlay before drive belt installation with subsequent adjustment of tension and torque installation of bolt A and bolt B to 44 Nm (440 kgf-cm, 32 ft. lbs.). Use Special Service Tool: 09023-12700 to attach the pressure feed tube to the rear stay while torquing it to 41 Nm (420 kgf-cm, 30 ft. lbs.). During the procedure avoid allowing oil to adhere to the oil pressure sensor connector. The power steering system bleeding process starts by connecting the return hose with its clip followed by reinstallation of the RH engine under cover along with installation and full pushing down of the oil reservoir tank cover.
