2003 Toyota Avalon Ball Joint Parts Q&A

  • Q: How to service and repair the ball joint on 2003 Toyota Avalon?
A: Service of the ball joint begins with removing the front axle hub before proceeding with lower ball joint removal through dust deflector screwdriver removal and subsequent cotter pin and nut removal. Service Tool 09628-62011 serves as the extraction method for the lower ball joint. The ball joint examination requires the knurling of the ball joint stud 5 times in reverse direction then forward direction before securing the nut. Meanwhile, the torque wrench enables a continuous 2-4 second turning period with the torque measurement recorded at the 5th turn. The recommended torque span is from 1.0 to 3.4 Nm (10 - 35 kgf-cm, 8.7 - 30 inch lbs.). The first step is to install the lower ball joint along with the nut while applying torque at 123 Nm (1,250 kgf-cm, 90 ft. lbs.). After that, put a new cotter pin in place before tightening the nut at 60 degrees when the holes do not align for the pin. The installation of a fresh dust deflector requires Special Service Tools which include 09316-60011 (09316-00011, 09316-00041), 09608-32010 along with a hammer for precise alignment of the holes that connect the ABS speed sensor to the dust deflector and steering knuckle. To complete the installation you must reinstall the front axle hub and verify the ABS speed sensor signal and front wheel alignment while steering angle sensor zero point calibration is required if VSC is present on the vehicle.
