2002 Toyota Avalon Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to service and repair the ball joint on 2002 Toyota Avalon?
A: The first step to repair a ball joint includes taking off the front axle hub. After that detach the lower ball joint by using a screwdriver to remove the dust deflector. Lastly untwist the cotter pin and loosen the nut. Apply Special Service Tool number 09628-62011 to disconnect the lower ball joint. To test steering movement properly you twist the ball joint stud five times before installing the nut. Use a torque wrench at 2-4 second turns and record torque on the fifth turn at 1.0 - 3.4 Nm (10 - 35 kgf-cm, 8.7 - 30 inch lbs.). After installing the lower ball joint and 123 Nm nut set the torque tightness to 123 Nm at 1,250kgf-cm (1,250 kgf-cm). Reinstall a new cotter pin and push the nut further 60-degrees whenever the cotter pin holes do not match. Pin the new dust deflector onto the steering knuckle with the hammer and ABS speed sensor tools: 09316-60011 (09316-00011, 09316-00041) and 09608-32010. Put the front axle hub back in place and verify the ABS sensor signal and front wheel alignment. Also normalize the steering angle sensor when VSC technology is installed.
