2003 Toyota 4Runner Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the water pump on 2003 Toyota 4Runner?
A: Beginning the water pump replacement requires removing the engine under cover sub-assy No.1 by unfastening its 4 bolts. You should drain engine coolant followed by V-bank cover and radiator support seal upper removal after dislodging its 11 clips. The process starts by losing tension from 4 fluid coupling bolts before taking out the fan alongside the generator V belt. The water pump replacement process begins with the fan with fluid coupling through hose clamp removal and separation of the oil cooler hoses from the fan shroud followed by disconnecting the radiator reserve tank hose before bolt removal from the fan shroud as well as the radiator reserve tank. Start by removing the 4 fluid coupling nuts before extracting both the fan with coupling and its attached fan shroud as the last step is to take out the fan pulley. Start by removing the air cleaner assembler after disconnecting ventilation hose No.2. The process to replace the water inlet starts by disconnecting the 2 oil cooler hoses and 2 radiator hoses and 5 water by-pass hoses before removing the 5 bolts and the water inlet and afterward removing the O-ring from the water outlet pipe and the gasket from the water pump. The repair process starts by removing idler pulley sub-assy No.2 through 2 bolt removal and subsequent removal of 2 idler pulleys until the generator assy with its separate cooler compressor assy leaves the vehicle. After that comes the water pump assy removal together with the V-ribbed belt tensioner assy and its associated 17 bolts, water pump, and gasket. Follow the installation process by applying 17 bolts to the new water pump assy with a new gasket and torque them to 9.0 Nm (92 kgf-cm, 80 inch lbs.) for 10 mm (0.39 inch) head and to 23 Nm (235 kgf-cm, 17 ft. lbs.) for 12 mm (0.47 inch) head. Permanently fasten the V-ribbed belt tensioner assy followed by cooler compressor assy, and generator assy before you install idler pulley sub-assy No.2 using its 2 bolts which require a torque of 39 Nm (398 kgf-cm, 29 ft. lbs.). The procedure for installing the water inlet consists of attaching new O-rings to the water outlet pipe while also installing new gaskets onto the water pump followed by applying soapy water to the O-ring and securing the water inlet with 5 bolts torqued to 9.0 Nm (92 kgf-cm, 80 inch lbs.). Next, hook up the 5 water by-pass hoses and 2 radiator hoses and 2 oil cooler hoses. First install the air cleaner assembly and secure ventilation hose No.2 before using the fan with fluid coupling to position its pulley at the water pump then put the fan coupling together with the fan shroud followed by temporary installation of the four fluid coupling nuts to complete installation by tightening the two fan shroud bolts and radiator reserve tank bolt to 5.0 Nm (51 kgf-cm, 44 inch lbs.) and attaching the reserve tank hose and fastening the two oil cooler hoses with the hose clamp. The installation process of fan and generator V belt requires tightening the fan with fluid coupling by applying 21 Nm of torque (214 kgf-cm, 15 ft. lbs.) to the 4 fluid coupling bolts before reinstalling the radiator support seal upper while adding engine coolant and verifying for leakage. Access the V-bank cover before fastening it with 2 nuts and torquing them to 7.5 Nm (76 kgf-cm, 66 inch lbs.). The final procedure includes sub-assy No.1 engine under cover reinstallation using 4 bolts tightened to 29 Nm (296 kgf-cm, 21 ft. lbs.).
