2002 Toyota 4Runner Water Pump Parts Q&A
Q: How to service and repair the water pump on 2002 Toyota 4Runner?
A: Begin water pump servicing by removing the timing belt along with the water inlet and the thermostat before disconnecting the No.2 oil cooler hose from the water pump and extracting the component itself. The inspection of the water pump for coolant leakage at both the water and air holes should lead to water pump replacement. Additionally, if coolant reaches the timing belt it requires a new timing belt. A smooth and quiet operation of the water pump pulley requires testing the bearing for proper function so if any issues occur the pump should be replaced. The fluid coupling service requires removal of its 4 nuts and fan. Check the fluid coupling for damage as well as silicon oil leaks. Replace the coupling if needed before reinstalling the fan with its 4 nuts tightened to 7.4 Nm (75 kgf-cm, 65 inch lbs.). Inspect both the fan pulley bracket for smooth operation and check whether it needs replacement while testing the timing belt machine. First clean the water pump and cylinder block touch surfaces by removing all old packing material (FIPG) through a combination of razor blade and gasket scraper work then finish the components with non-residue solvent cleaning. Seal packing (Part No. 08826-00100 or equivalent) needs a 2 - 3 mm (0.08 - 0.12 inch) opening nozzle to apply to the water pump groove. Assemble the parts within 5 minutes of application but reapply if assembly occurs later. You need to apply the provided seal packing before you can install the 7 bolts of the water pump but you must tighten these bolts to 20 Nm (200 kgf-cm, 14 ft. lbs.). Afterward install the No.2 oil cooler hose followed by the thermostat and water inlet assembly and complete by attaching the timing belt.
