2002 Toyota 4Runner Radiator Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to service the radiator on 2002 Toyota 4Runner?
A: Service of the radiator starts with draining engine coolant then removing 7 grille handle clips before disconnecting component connections. You should detach the upper radiator hose together with the radiator reservoir hose and lower radiator hose before you remove the radiator No.2 fan shroud. Automatic Transmission models need this procedure first: remove oil cooler hoses by unscrewing 4 bolts which allows removing the radiator. To start disassembly remove the No.1 fan shroud by unbolt its four screws and then separate the radiator supports while also unthreading the drain plug. Use Special Service Tool: 09230-01010 where the claw attaches to the overhaul handle with its stopper bolt positioned to achieve a dimension "B" range between 0.2 and 0.3 mm (0.008 - 0.012 inch). Use the same tool to uncaulk the lock plates after which gently strike the radiator port with a soft-faced hammer for tank and O-ring removal. Lock plate damage requires attention since it must be recaulked a maximum of two times until replacement is necessary. Use new O-rings in addition to tanks and check for no foreign materials in the lock plate groove before tapping it with a soft-faced hammer until all gaps are eliminated. Attach the punch assembly to the overhaul handle after which you must adjust the stopper bolt to reach dimension "B" at 8.4 mm (0.34 inch). A tool should be pressed against the lock plate to check its height (H) stands between 7.4 - 7.8 mm (0.2959 - 0.3119 inch). First paint the lock plates followed by inserting a new O-ring into the drain plug before soaking the drain with soapy water while putting on the drain plug finally. The technician uses Special Service Tool: 09230-01010 to check for water leaks by applying pressure up to 177 kPa (1.8 kgf/cm2, 26 psi) and confirms no fluid escapes through the inlet or outlet pipes. The installation process starts with support mounting under 12.7 Nm torque before moving to install the No.1 fan shroud. Installation of the radiator requires 4 bolts with 12 Nm (120 kgf-cm, 8.7 ft. lbs.) torque then automatic transmission models get connected oil cooler hoses followed by the radiator No.2 fan shroud set up and reconnecting the lower radiator hose and radiator reservoir hose and upper radiator hose. After hooking up the radiator grille with 7 clips the system requires engine coolant for filling followed by starting the engine to verify coolant leakage.
