2001 Toyota 4Runner Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to service and repair the radiator on 2001 Toyota 4Runner?
A: Draining the engine coolant is the first task to start servicing the radiator followed by taking out the 7 clips from the radiator grille. Start the radiator service process by disconnecting the upper hose followed by the reservoir hose and lower hose then proceed to remove the radiator No.2 fan shroud. Automatic transmission systems require oil cooler hose separation followed by removing the radiator by unfastening its 4 bolts. The first step in disassembly involves removing four bolts from the No.1 fan shroud after which you can take out the radiator supports and drain plug. Install the claw section of Special Service Tool: 09230-01010 onto the overhaul handle before setting the stopper bolt to reach a dimension "B" range of 0.2 - 0.3 mm (0.008 - 0.012 inch). The lock plates need uncaulking with the same tool which allows a soft-faced hammer to tap the radiator port until the tank with O-ring comes out. A thorough evaluation of the lock plate must be performed to confirm it lacks deformation because it will block proper assembly. New O-rings should be installed after checking that the lock plate groove has no foreign materials and the O-ring remains untwisted. A soft-faced hammer should be used to tap the lock plate until all gaps disappear. Special Service Tool: 09230-01010 needs reassembly using the punch assembly before adjusting the stopper bolt to reach a dimension of "B" which should be 8.4 mm (0.34 inch). A person should press the tool onto the lock plate to perform caulking while verifying the lock plate height (H) measures between 7.4 to 7.8 mm (0.2959 to 0.3119 inch). Start by painting the lock plates before installing a brand new drain plug O-ring and soaking the equipment in soapy water followed by drain plug installation. Then perform a leak test using a Special Service Tool: 09230-01010. Special Service Tool 09230-01010 helps detect water leakage through its use to seal inlet and outlet pipes before applying 177 kPa (11.8 kgf/cm2, 26 psi) of test pressure with a radiator cap tester and verifying no leakage occurs. First secure the supports to 12.7 Nm (130 kgf-cm, 9 ft. lbs.), then mount the No.1 fan shroud. You must first fasten the radiator using 4 bolts tightened to 12 Nm (120 kgf-cm, 8.7 ft. lbs.) before connecting the oil cooler hoses followed by the radiator No.2 fan shroud and reconnection of the lower radiator hose together with the radiator reservoir hose and upper radiator hose. Following these steps involves reinstalling the radiator grille with seven clips and adding engine coolant before an engine start check for any coolant leakages.
