2000 Toyota 4Runner Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to service the radiator on 2000 Toyota 4Runner?
A: You should start radiator service by draining the engine coolant and removing the radiator grille through clip removal of 7 components. Start by cutting the connections for upper and lower radiator hoses and the radiator reservoir hose followed by removing the No.2 fan shroud of the radiator. Automatic transmission models require administrators to disconnect oil cooler hoses prior to removing the radiator by removing the 4 bolts from each hose. The service procedure requires removal of 4 bolts to detach the No.1 fan shroud before you extract the radiator supports along with the drain plug. The overhaurling operation requires installation of Special Service Tool: 09230-01010 equipped with a claw that should possess a bolt stopper set for dimension "B" between 0.2 - 0.3 mm (0.008 - 0.012 inch). The lock plates need their caulk removed using this tool and afterward use a soft-faced hammer to gently strike the radiator port until both tank and O-ring remove. The lock plate must be inspected for damage since the radiator allows only two recaulking procedures before requiring a new one. New O-rings and tank installations must avoid foreign objects in the lock plate opening. A soft-faced hammer should be used to tap the lock plate for removing gaps. Special Service Tool: 09230-01010 enables the adjustment of stopper bolt until dimension "B" reaches 8.4 mm (0.34 inch). The lock plate caulk happens by putting the tool against it and validating its height lies in the 7.4 - 7.8 mm (0.2959 - 0.3119 inch) range. First install a new O-ring into the drain plug and then apply soapy water before installing the drain plug. Finally paint the lock plates. Before conducting the test check for water leaks by using Special Service Tool: 09230-01010 to plug both pipes while using a radiator cap tester to reach 177 kPa (1.8 kgf/cm2, 26 psi) and stirring the radiator with water to eliminate air bubbles. Fasten the supports at a torque force of 12.7 Nm (130 kgf-cm, 9 ft. lbs.) before installing the No.1 fan shroud. Secure the radiator by tightening 4 bolts to 12 Nm (120 kgf-cm, 8.7 ft. lbs.) and attach automatic transmission oil cooler hoses followed by installation of the radiator No.2 fan shroud then reconnect all hoses including the lower, reservoir and upper ones. The radiator grille replacement process ends with 7 clip installation followed by engine coolant addition and engine start and leakage inspection.
