- Q: How to Properly Service and Repair a Thermostat on 2000 Toyota 4Runner?A: engin cooling fluid drained out as the first step for thermostat servicing. Disconnect the lower radiator hose from the water inlet before removing the thermostat by unscrewing the two nuts which hold the inlet housing to the water inlet and finally disconnecting the inlet to take out the thermostat with its gasket. Check the valve opening function of the thermostat by heating water while placing it inside until it reaches 80 - 84 degrees Celsius (176 - 183 degrees Fahrenheit); if it fails in this range replace it. The thermostat requires evaluation for its 8 mm (0.31 inch) valve lift capability at 95 degrees Celsius (203 degrees Fahrenheit) and complete valve closure at 40 degrees Celsius (104 degrees Fahrenheit) before replacement. Place the thermostat inside the water inlet housing using a new gasket while positioning the jiggle valve properly next to the protrusion on the water inlet housing. Either end of this positioning can be within 15 degrees of the stated direction. Secure the water inlet to the lower radiator hose through two nuts by directing its top mark (protrusion) toward upright position before tightening to 20 Nm (200 kgf-cm, 15 ft-lbs). Before you begin fill the coolant reservoir then start the engine while inspecting for any fluid leaks.
