2001 Toyota 4Runner Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to service and repair the water pump on 2001 Toyota 4Runner?
A: The service process for the water pump starts by removing the timing belt then the water inlet and thermostat and finally separating the No.2 oil cooler hose from the water pump until the pump can be extracted. An inspection of the water pump begins with checking the water hole and air hole for coolant leakage. Replace the water pump immediately if leakage exists. The service also requires timing belt replacement if engine coolant has affected this component. To inspect the water pump bearing performance you should rotate the pulley while making sure it operates with minimal noise and friction then change the water pump if required. To inspect and maintain the fluid coupling begin by removing its 4 nuts and fan then check for damages and silicon oil leaks while replacing the fluid coupling as needed before reinstalling the fan with its 4 nuts at 7.4 Nm (75 kgf-cm, 65 inch lbs.). The fan pulley bracket for smooth operation must be checked and if needed a replacement should happen and the timing belt requires inspection. To start with installation begin by putting in the water pump after taking away any packing material (FIPG) so oil does not come into contact with pump and block surfaces. Clean gasket surfaces along with sealing grooves by using a combination of gasket scraper and razor blade tools before wiping all components with non-residue solvent. Install the seal packing (Part No. 08826-00100 or equivalent) to the water pump groove through a nozzle tube with a 2 - 3 mm (0.08 - 0.12 inch) opening while assembling parts within five minutes or replace the material. Install the water pump with 7 bolts while torquing to 20 Nm after removing the tube nozzle and installing the cap within five minutes. End the installation by attaching the No.2 oil cooler hose followed by the thermostat and water inlet and reinstallation of the timing belt.
