2002 Toyota Tundra Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to service and repair the power steering pump on 2002 Toyota Tundra?
A: A proper power steering pump service starts with disassembling the air cleaner assembly by first unclipping the MAP meter connector then detaching the hose after unscrewing the clamp followed by the removal of three bolts. The return hose needs removal through unscrewing its clip to prevent any fluid leakage onto the drive belt. To remove the oil pressure switch disconnect its connector then unscrew it from the pressure feed tube being cautious not to drop it since a damaged unit requires replacement. You must disconnect the pressure feed tube by uninstalling the union bolt along with the gasket. Begin the drive belt replacement by unscrewing bolt "A" followed by removing nut "B" and bolt "C." The PS vane pump assembly can be detached with bolt "A" and nut "B" removal then continuing with the assembly's complete extraction. Place the PS vane pump assembly first before tightening bolt "A" and nut "B" temporarily. Afterwards adjust drive belt tension by modifying bolt "C" then torque bolt "A" and nut "B" to 44 Nm (450 kgf-cm, 33 ft. lbs.). Connect the pressure feed tube by making sure the stopper touches the PS vane pump body before torquing the union bolt to 46.5 Nm (475 kgf-cm, 34 ft. lbs.) with a new gasket in place. Secure the oil pressure switch to the pressure feed tube and tighten it to 20.6 Nm (210 kgf-cm, 15 ft. lbs.) while paying attention to avoid oil contamination of the switch. Thereafter place the air cleaner assembly back in position by first securing the hose and three bolts before installing the clamp and reconnecting both the hose and MAP meter connector. The power steering system requires bleeding as the final step.
