2002 Toyota Tacoma Parts Questions & Experts Answers
Q: How to remove the coil spring on 2002 Toyota Tacoma?
A: Begin the coil spring removal by first removing the front wheel and torquing it to 110 Nm (1,150 kgf-cm, 83 ft. lbs.). Use Special Service Tool: 09727-22011 (09727-23010, 09727-23020, 09727-23030, 09727-23040) while compressing the coil spring by inserting the fork into its central area so you can lower it by turning the spring. Remove the stabilizer bar by disconnecting its 2 nuts along with the links and two retainers and two cushions at 29.5 Nm (300 kgf-cm, 22 ft. lbs.) torque on the stabilizer bar and 90 Nm (920 kgf-cm, 66 ft. lbs.) torque on the lower arm. Then remove the 2 stabilizer bar bracket set bolts with 29 Nm torque (300 kgf-cm, 22 ft. lbs.). The installation requires a torque of 110 Nm (1,100 kgf-cm, 80 ft. lbs.) to remove the cotter pin and nut but requires a further tightening of the nut to 60 degrees when the cotter pin holes are mismatched. Apply Special Service Tool 09628-02011 to the lower ball joint that connects to the lower suspension arm by disengaging it with caution to the lower ball joint boot. The technician should loosen the lower suspension arm set bolt then remove the nut with 200 Nm (2,050 kgf-cm, 148 ft. lbs.) torque while using 300 Nm (3,050 kgf-cm, 221 ft. lbs.) torque for the strut bar front set bolt. They should stabilize the suspension before torquing the installation. Two bolts need to be pulled with the removal of the lower suspension arm including the strut bar. After pullout of the coil spring ensure that its end remains in contact with the lower suspension arm seat before reinstallation. The strut bar and spring bumper require removal when technicians remove the 2 nuts with torque set to 150 Nm (1,530 kgf-cm, 111 ft. lbs.) followed by unfastening and removing the remaining nut and spring bumper with torque set to 43 Nm (440 kgf-cm, 32 ft. lbs.). The shaded area should be cut for replacement until the tube edge becomes visible while avoiding damage. Align the cut section downward before installing Special Service Tool: 09710-30021 (09710-03071, 09710-03141) with a press to remove the bushing. Use Special Service Tool: 09710-30021 (09710-03071/09710-03141) while operating a press to drive the new bushing into the tube from rear-facing direction. If you need to put these components back you just follow the exact opposite process of uninstallation while checking the wheel alignment after finishing the installation.
