2002 Toyota Sienna Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to remove and install the Rack And Pinion assembly on 2002 Toyota Sienna?
A: The rack and pinion removal begins by aligning the front wheels straight ahead and proceeding to remove the steering wheel pad and steering wheel. Disconnection of the RH and LH tie rod ends along with the intermediate shaft assembly and clamp plate happens after removing the nut and clamp plate assembly. Use Special Service Tool: 09023-38400 to disconnect pressure feed and return tubes before taking out the 4 stabilizer bar bolts without removing the bar itself. To remove the PS rack and pinion assembly from the left-hand side of the vehicle one should first unravel the stabilizer bar by removing its 2 bolts and nuts before accessing the bolts to extract the assembly properly and safely. The power steering rack and pinion assembly installation starts with the LH side fitting which needs preservation of turn pressure tube integrity before installing both rack and pinion assembly set bolts and nuts while torquing them to 181 Nm (1,850 kgf-cm, 134 ft. lbs.). The installation requires a torque wrench with a 300 mm (11.81 inch) fulcrum length to secure the 4 stabilizer bar bolts to 19 Nm (190 kgf-cm, 14ft. lbs.) ULTIMATELY APPLICATION OF TORQUE. Use Special Service Tool: 09023-38400 to connect the pressure feed and return tubes by torquing them to 27 Nm (280 kgf-cm, 20 ft. lbf). Install the clamp plate before attaching the nut while tightening it to 10 Nm (100 kgf-cm, 7 ft. lbs.). Subsequently join the intermediate shaft assembly with the RH and LH tie rod ends. While the front wheels keep facing forward and the vehicle is lifted into position set the spiral cable at its center before installing the steering wheel and temporary nut tightening to connect the steering wheel connector. The power steering system should be bled while checking the steering wheel center point followed by steering wheel set nut tightening to 50 Nm (510 kgf-cm, 37 ft. lbs.) before installing the steering wheel pad and doing wheel alignment calibration.
