2002 Toyota Sienna Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to service and repair the power steering pump on 2002 Toyota Sienna?
A: The first step for power steering pump maintenance requires disconnecting the return hose through clip removal while being cautious about drive belt fluid leakage. You should use Special Service Tool: 09023-38400 to disconnect the pressure feed tube from the PS gear assembly after removing its 2 clamp plate set nuts followed by the bolt and 2 clamp plates and 2 holders. Use Special Service Tool: 09249-63010 to loosen bolt "A" and bolt "B" in order to remove the drive belt. Separate the PS vane pump assembly together with the pressure feed tube by disconnecting the oil pressure switch connector and then softening bolt "A" enough to remove the pump assembly but bolt "A" will not fully detach. Removing the pressure feed tube involves removing the oil pressure switch from the union bolt without dropping it because damaged or dropped switches require replacement. First remove the union bolt followed by taking out the gasket before removing the pressure feed tube. First install the pressure feed tube together with its new gasket on the PS vane pump assembly with the union bolt before torquing it to 52 Nm (530 kgf-cm, 38 ft. lbs.) but ensure that the pressure feed tube stopper touches the front bracket. Next install the oil pressure switch to the union bolt with 21 Nm (210 kgf-cm, 15 ft. lbs.) while being careful not to let the oil seal touch the connector. The service technician should first secure the PS vane pump assembly through bolts "A" and "B" then utilize Special Service Tool: 09249-63010 to tighten bolt "A" to 29 Nm (300 kgf-cm, 22 ft. lbs.) before torquing bolt "B" to 43 Nm (440 kgf-cm, 32 ft. lbs.) during which time the oil pressure switch connector should be joined while maintaining caution against oil on the connector. Put the pressure feed tube onto the PS gear assembly through Special Service Tool: 09023-38400 before tightening it to 27 Nm (280 kgf-cm, 20 ft. lbs.) with the torque wrench maintained parallel to the tool. Subsequently attach two clamp plates and two holders to the pressure feed tube by tightening the bolt followed by screwing in the 2 clamp plate set nuts with 7.8 Nm (80 kgf-cm, 69 inch lbs.) torque. The power steering system needs bleeding by attaching the return hose to its clip.
