2002 Toyota Sequoia Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to service and repair the water pump on 2002 Toyota Sequoia?
A: The repair and service process begins by draining engine coolant followed by timing belt removal and then proceeding to remove No.2 idler pulley. Detach the water bypass hose from the water inlet housing then remove the 2 bolts which secure the housing to the water pump before disconnecting the housing from the front water bypass joint. Maintain extra care to extract the O-ring from the water inlet housing when performing this operation. Afterward remove the water pump while unfastening 5 bolts, 2 stud bolts, nut, gasket and extract the O-ring from the water bypass pipe. Examining the water pump for coolant leakage through the air hole and water hole must be done to determine if replacement of the water pump and timing belt is needed. Check if the water pump bearing moves without noise while turning the pulley before deciding whether to replace it. Begin with inspecting and potentially changing the fan alongside its 4 nuts while torquing them to 8.5 Nm (85 kgf-cm, 75 inch lbs.). The smooth operation of the fan pulley bracket should be checked for replacement while timing belt components need inspection. Install a new O-ring onto the water bypass pipe end followed by O-ring lubrication using soapy water then connect the water pump to the pipe then use the 5 bolts and 2 stud bolts and nut to fasten the water pump with new gasket done while following uniform torque of 21 Nm (215 kgf-cm, 15 ft. lbs.) for bolts and 18 Nm (185 kgf-cm, 13 ft. lbs.) for stud bolts and nuts. The first step is to remove all old packing material (FIPG) from water inlet housing and water pump contact surfaces using gasket scrapers and razor blades. Afterward, all components need thorough cleaning with a non-residue solvent. Seal packing (Part No. 08826-00100 or equivalent) needs to be applied to the sealing groove of the water inlet housing within three minutes before installing a new O-ring to the housing and applying soapy water before attaching the water inlet housing to the front water bypass joint hole. Long-term service stability can be achieved by using the 2 bolts to secure the water inlet and housing assembly after either bolt gets tightened to 18 Nm (185 kgf-cm, 13 ft. lbs.). The assembly requires a water bypass hose connection to the water inlet housing. Complete the procedure by reinstalling the No.2 idler pulley followed by the timing belt before filling engine coolant and checking for leaks during engine start-up while also verifying the engine coolant level.
