2003 Toyota Sequoia Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to service and repair the water pump on 2003 Toyota Sequoia?
A: Service of the water pump begins with draining engine coolant before removing timing belt and No.2 idler pulley. The water bypass hose linking to the water inlet housing assembly requires detachment before the technician proceeds to remove the 2 bolts holding the housing to the water pump and disconnects the housing from the front water bypass joint. At this point, the technician takes out the water inlet assembly along with the inlet housing while properly removing the O-ring from the water inlet housing. Start by disconnecting the water pump by taking out all five bolts and two stud bolts and a nut and a gasket while separating the O-ring fitted to the water bypass pipe. A check for coolant leakage through the water pump should be performed by observing the air hole and water hole. If any leakage exists the water pump and timing belt need replacement. Examine the water pump bearing movement through pulley rotation because a smooth operation calls for new water pump replacement. The procedure for the fluid coupling involves removing the 4 nuts then the fan followed by damage evaluation and silicon oil leak examinations before installing a new fluid coupling followed by fan reinstallation with 4 nuts torqued to 8.5 Nm (85 kgf-cm, 75 inch lbs.). The smoothness of the fan pulley bracket must be checked and replaced when defective. Along with proactive timing belt component assessment. Installation requires placing a new O-ring on the water bypass pipe end and applying soapy water before bringing the water pump together with the water bypass pipe. You must use 5 bolts and 2 stud bolts alongside a nut to install the water pump with a new gasket by applying 21 Nm (215 kgf-cm, 15 ft. lbs.) torque for the bolts and 18 Nm (185 kgf-cm, 13 ft. lbs.) torque for the stud bolts and nuts. The water inlet housing together with water pump contact surfaces require both a razor blade and gasket scraper to remove any remaining FIPG packing. Wash all components thoroughly with non-residue solvent. The water inlet housing sealing groove requires a application of seal packing (Part No. 08826-00100 or equivalent) directly before assembling components within 3 minutes. The water inlet housing needs a new O-ring before being attached to the front water bypass joint through soapy water application. Secure the housing using 2 bolts with torque set to 18 Nm (185 kgf-cm, 13 ft. lbs.). The water bypass hose must be connected properly. The procedure includes placing back the No.2 idler pulley and timing belt followed by filling coolant into the system from where the engine is started while checking for leaks then verifying the coolant level.
