2003 Toyota Sequoia Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to service the thermostat on 2003 Toyota Sequoia?
A: The first step to service the thermostat requires engine coolant draining. You should disconnect the water inlet from the water inlet housing by untightening three nuts. You should first remove the thermostat along with its gasket. When inspecting the thermostat it should be submerged in water and slowly heated to verify the valve opening temperature exists between 80 - 84 degrees Celsius (176 - 183 degrees Fahrenheit) and if not to replace the thermostat. The valve should demonstrate a lift of 10 mm (0.39 inch) at 95 degrees Celsius (203 degrees Fahrenheit) with a fully closed valve below 40 degrees Celsius (104 degrees Fahrenheit) and you should replace the thermostat if any specifications are not met. To set up the thermostat installation you must place a new gasket on it before inserting the device into the water inlet housing with the jiggle valve pointed upward between 30 degrees angles either side of its designated spot. Set the water inlet with its three nuts through reinstallation before tightening them to 19 Nm at a torque of 195 kgf-cm and 14 ft. lbs. Add engine coolant to the reservoir while operating the engine to evaluate coolant leaks and then verify engine coolant level.
