2002 Toyota Sequoia Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to service and repair a thermostat on 2002 Toyota Sequoia?
A: Engine coolant drainage should be the first step when repairing or servicing the thermostat. Before servicing the thermostat remove the 3 nuts which secure the water inlet housing. First remove both the thermostat together with its gasket from the system. A thermostat check requires submersion in water followed by water temperature elevation until the valve opening reaches 80 - 84 degrees Celsius (176 - 183 degrees Fahrenheit); any defective thermostat should be replaced. The priority check demands an inspection of both the 10 mm (0.39 inch) valve lift at 95 degrees Celsius (203 degrees Fahrenheit) and complete coolant flow restriction below 40 degrees Celsius (104 degrees Fahrenheit); get a new thermostat when these minimum requirements are not satisfied. Put a new gasket on the thermostat before you place it into the water inlet housing where its jiggle valve must face upward directly while keeping it set between 30 degrees of either side of the recommended direction. Fasten 3 nuts to the water inlet and tighten them to 19 Nm torque specification (195 kgf-cm and 14 ft. lbs.). Pour engine coolant into the system followed by engine start-up before checking for any coolant leakage while verifying the coolant amount.
