2002 Toyota Sequoia Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to remove and reinstall a radiator on 2002 Toyota Sequoia?
A: Start the radiator removal process by unfastening the engine under cover followed by draining engine coolant then taking off the reservoir hose and upper and lower radiator hoses along with A/T oil cooler hoses from the radiator. The first step is to remove the No.2 fan shroud which requires unclipping two components before moving onto the radiator assembly that has its four bolts removed. Lastly, the No.1 fan shroud can be extracted when all four bolts are removed. Disassembly begins by removing four bolts and two pipes together with two bushings and two radiator supports. After removing the radiator supports the user needs to disconnect the radiator cap and drain plug. Complete the Assembly Special Service Tool: 09230-01010 by inserting the claw onto the overhaul handle and adjusting the stopper bolt to achieve a 0.2 - 0.3 mm (0.008 - 0.012 inch) dimensional "B". Disassemble the lock plates with the tool while untightening the lock plates before you can remove the tanks and O-rings through soft-faced hammer strikes to the radiator ports. The lock plate needs inspection for damage which requires correction to build proper reassembly and the radiator can only receive two replacements before needing complete replacement. New O-rings go into the lock plate together with tanks while carefully checking the space for foreign objects at the lock plate's groove before using a soft-faced hammer to close any gaps. The technicians should use Special Service Tools 09230-01010 and 09231-14010 to set the stopper bolt at a correct position which produces dimension "B" at 8.4 mm (0.34 inch). The operator must press the tool onto the lock plate to caulk it before checking the lock plate height (H) to verify it falls within 7.4 - 7.8 mm (0.2959 - 0.3119 inch). The new drain plug O-ring requires installation before applying soapy water for draining installation. Use Special Service Tool 09230-01010 to plugging the inlet and outlet pipes while applying pressure of 147 kPa (1.5 kgf/cm2, 21 psi) with a radiator cap tester to check for water leaks. Use 4 bolts to secure the radiator supports at 12.7 Nm (130 kgf-cm, 9 ft. lbs.) before installing the radiator cap. Start installation with the No.1 fan shroud secured by 4 bolts at 5 Nm torque followed by installing the radiator assembly after setting its brackets into the support holes with 4 bolts at 12 Nm torque. The A/T oil cooler hoses and both radiator hoses as well as the radiator reservoir hose need to be connected to the radiator after installing the two clips on the No.2 fan shroud. Testing the vehicle with coolant while running the engine is necessary to detect leaks before repeating coolant checks and placing the engine under its protective cover.
