2001 Toyota Sequoia Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to service and repair the water pump on 2001 Toyota Sequoia?
A: Prior to working on the water pump a mechanic needs to remove the coolant followed by the timing belt and No.2 idler pulley. The service begins by disconnecting the water bypass hose from the water inlet housing alongside bolt removal and separation of the housing from the front water bypass joint before you extract the water inlet assembly with its O-ring and water inlet housing. Remove the water pump by unfastening the 5 bolts and 2 stud bolts along with the nut and water pump and gasket before taking out the O-ring from the water bypass pipe. Visual inspection of the water pump must include examination of its air hole and water hole to identify coolant leakage; water pump replacement and timing belt replacement is required in case of leakage detection. Checking the water pump bearing movement through pulley rotation enables an assessment for new water pump replacement. To work on the fluid coupling start by removing its fan and four nuts before inspecting for damages and silicon oil leaks while also replacing affected parts before you reinstall the fan and secure it with proper torque of 8.5 Nm (85 kgf-cm, 75 inch lbs.). Perform a smoothness check of the fan pulley before replacing the pulley bracket. At the same time, inspect all timing belt components. The water pump installation requires placing an O-ring on the water bypass pipe end followed by applying soapy water on it before attaching the water pump to the pipe. Install the pump with a new gasket using the 5 bolts and 2 stud bolts and nut. Repeat the tightening steps with bolt torque set at 21 Nm (215 kgf-cm, 15 ft. lbs.) and stud bolt and nut torque at 18 Nm (185 kgf-cm, 13 ft. lbs.). The technician should remove FIPG packing from gasket surfaces and sealing grooves of all components before applying seal packing (part number 08826-00100 or equivalent) to the water inlet housing sealing area. Technicians must complete this step within three minutes of FIPG removal. The process entails installing a new O-ring on the water inlet housing followed by applying soapy water and attaching the housing to the front water bypass joint hole. Secure these components with 2 bolts tightened to 18 Nm (185 kgf-cm, 13 ft. lbs.) while connecting the water bypass hose to the housing. The last installation steps include inserting the No.2 idler pulley followed by the timing belt then topping off the engine coolant followed by engine start-up and leak verification running through another engine coolant check.
