2002 Toyota Land Cruiser Wheel Bearing Parts Q&A

  • Q: How to service and repair the wheel bearing on 2002 Toyota Land Cruiser?
A: The wheel bearing servicing requires starting with wheel removal and next performing brake caliper removal through flexible hose disconnecting from steering knuckle before taking out two bolts and washers and caliper while securely supporting it. Begin by removing the flange through a combination of a screwdriver with hammer and a snap ring expander tool to remove the snap ring. Proceed to take off six nuts and washers while installing them temporarily to preserve stud bolt threads. Strike bolt ends with a brass bar during hammering to free up nuts and cone washers before removing the flange and gasket. Use Special Service Tool: 09607-60020 to detach the handle from an axle hub with disc after first unlocking the lock washer using a screwdriver and then removing the lock washer and lock nut successively. Proceed with slow hub removal without harming the ABS speed sensor rotor and oil seal. For installation, place the axle hub with disc onto the steering knuckle, install the outer bearing and claw washer, then adjust the preload by installing the adjusting nut and tightening it with Special Service Tool: 09607-60020 to a torque of 59 Nm (600 kgf-cm, 43 ft. lbs.), turning the axle hub several times to settle the bearing, loosening the adjusting nut until it can rotate by hand, and then retightening it to a torque of 4.3 - 6.5 Nm (44 - 66 kgf-cm, 38 - 57 inch lbs.), checking for looseness on the bearing and measuring the preload, which should be 42 - 67 N (4.3 - 6.8 kgf, 9.5 - 15.0 lbs.) at starting. The next step involves installing a new lock washer and lock nut followed by torquing the lock nut to 64 Nm. After this users must confirm that the axle hub turns smoothly with no looseness and conduct a preload check for adjustment if needed. First secure the lock nut by bending the lock washer teeth inward then outward, place a new gasket on the axle hub and put on the flange followed by installation of six cone washers and washers before tightening new nuts to 33 Nm (335 kgf-cm, 24 ft.lbs.). Select a snap ring using the drive shaft pull-out method to achieve 0.2 mm (0.008 inch) or less space between the flange tip and snap ring before installing a new snap ring with a snap ring expander and a new grease cap to the flange. The procedure requires placing the brake caliper with washers before bolting it to proper torque strength of 123 Nm (1,250 kgf-cm, 91 ft. lbs.). Next, attach the flexible hose and bolt to the steering knuckle at 28 Nm (290 kgf-cm, 21 ft. lbs.) then reinstall the front wheel at 131 Nm (1,340 kgf-cm, 97 ft. lbs.) while checking the ABS speed sensor signal.
