2001 Toyota Land Cruiser Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to service and repair the wheel bearing on 2001 Toyota Land Cruiser?
A: Before starting the wheel bearing repair service begin by removing the front wheel followed by the brake caliper detachment by disconnecting flexible hose connections from the steering knuckle then separating the two bolts and washers with the caliper to keep it safely supported. Start with the removal of the flange by applying a screwdriver and hammer to detach the grease cap and use a snap ring expander to eradicate the snap ring before proceeding to uninstall six nuts and washers and placing the nuts temporarily to safeguard the stud bolt threads. Use a brass bar along with a hammer to hit the bolt heads until the cone washers together with the nuts release. Then remove the flange and gasket. Remove the lock washer with a screwdriver before using Special Service Tool 09607-60020 to remove the lock nut and lock washer and finally the adjusting nut to complete the removal of the axle hub along with disc by carefully avoiding damage to both ABS speed sensor rotor and oil seal. The claw washer and bearing should follow the axle hub from removal. Set the axle hub with disc on the steering knuckle before installing the outer bearing followed by the claw washer. Insert the adjusting nut into the axle hub followed by torquing it with Special Service Tool: 09607-60020 to 59 Nm (600 kgf-cm, 43 ft. lbs.) before turning the hub several times to settle the bearing. The technician must rotate and retighten the adjusting nut using tool 09607-60020 set to 4.3 - 6.5 Nm (44 - 66 kgf-cm, 38 - 57 inch lbs.). When finished they should check for bearing looseness. Test the preload by using a spring tension gauge and confirm it falls within 42 - 67 N (4.3 - 6.8 kgf, 9.5 - 15.0 lbs.). To complete the installation, add a new lock washer followed by installing a lock nut which should be tightly torqued to 64 Nm (650 kgf-cm, 47 ft. lbs.). Verify that the axle hub rotates freely from looseness issues. The procedure to secure the lock nut requires bending one tooth of the lock washer inward while bending the second tooth outward. After applying a new axle hub gasket place the flange followed by six cone washers and two washers and new nuts while torquing them to 33 Nm (335 kgf-cm, 24 ft. lbs.). To install the new snap ring the drive shaft needs to be removed while using the snap ring expander to put the ring into position with the flange tip achieving less than 0.2 mm (0.008 inch) clearance before adding the new grease cap. Utilize washers when installing the brake caliper onto its mounting position before bolting it using two fasteners torqued to 123 Nm (1,250 kgf-cm, 91 ft. lbs.). Then attach the flexible hose and bolt to the steering knuckle while torquing their connection to 28 Nm (290 kgf-cm, 21 ft. lbs.). The procedure ends by reattaching the front wheel after torquing it to 131 Nm (1,340 kgf-cm, 97 ft. lbs.) and verifying ABS speed sensor performance.
