2002 Toyota Land Cruiser Alternator Parts Q&A

  • Q: How to service and repair the alternator on 2002 Toyota Land Cruiser?
A: Begin the alternator repair process by disassembling from the generator cover together with cord clip on Canada models or disassembling only from the bolt and cord clip for all other models. Begin by unscrewing the nut then removing the terminal insulator before you take away the three nuts on the rear end cover. Unfasten the brush holder cover first followed by the five screws and remove the brush holder and voltage regulator until the seal plate is detached from the rectifier end frame. When removing the rectifier holder, you need to first remove all four screws together with rubber insulators. The pulley removal requires Special Service Tool 09820-63011 which should be fixed to the rotor shaft while disabling the pulley nut through counter-clockwise rotation until it barely turns. The next step is to remove the rectifier end frame through the following procedure: first remove its four nuts then use Special Service Tool 09286-46011 followed by the generator washer. The replacement procedure starts with removing four screws from the bearing retainer before using Special Service Tool 09950-60010 to press out the old bearing while installing a new one; retainer the bearing using four screws torque at 3.0 N.m. The procedure for the rear bearing requires stepping through careful removal of the outside bearing cover and bearing followed by placing the inner cover on the rotor while using Special Service Tool 09820-00031 to press in a new bearing and then finishing with the outside cover using Special Service Tool 09285-76010. Install the drive end frame to the pulley before adding the rotor then the rectifier end frame while inserting the generator washer on the rotor through frame insertion with a 29 mm socket wrench. The cord clip and four nuts requirement requires torque application of 4.5 N.m for 80 A models while 100 A models require the same torque for four nuts. Run the first thread of the pulley nut by hand before using the pulley holding tool to reach 39 Nm torque then finish tightening it to 110.5 N.m. Place the rectifier holder over its rubber insulators before securing the screws to 2.94 N.m. Once the brush holder receives five screws at 2.0 N.m torque installation, the seal plate and voltage regulator can be added before installing the cover on the brush holder. Install the end cover by securing two nuts and a bolt against specified torques followed by the plate terminal before mounting the rear end cover with three nuts along with a terminal insulator nut. The generator cover and cord clip installation for 100 A models must include component torquing to 16.6 N.m while ensuring rotor smooth rotation.
