2001 Toyota Land Cruiser Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to service and repair the alternator on 2001 Toyota Land Cruiser?
A: The alternator repair begins by disconnecting the generator cover along with its cord clip in Canadian models while other regions require removing the bolt together with its cord clip. Start by undoing the rear end cover through the removal of its nut and terminal insulator along with three nuts. The service begins with removing the brush holder cover after untightening its five screws and removing the voltage regulator and brush holder before taking off the seal plate from the rectifier end frame. When working on the rectifier holder remove its four screws and rubber insulators. Special Service Tool 09820-63010 eliminates the pulley by fastening to the rotor shaft and working the pulley nut counterclockwise less than half its rotation. To remove the rectifier end frame begin by uninstalling four nuts and cord clip for 80 A installations or four nuts only for 100 A installations using Special Service Tool 09286-46011 and separate the generator washer. Begin replacement by removing the four screws and bearing retainer from the front bearing before using Special Service Tool 09950-60010 (09951-00260, 09952-06010) to press out the old bearing which you must replace with a new one while using Special Service Tool 09950-60010 (09951-00500) and securing the bearing retainer with four screws at 3.0 N.m (31 kgf.cm, 27 in.lbf). The rear bearing installation process starts with bearing cover removal followed by bearing insertion with Special Service Tool 09820-00030. Afterward, press the outside bearing cover with Special Service Tool 09285-76010. Reassembly starts by mounting the drive end frame on the pulley then applying the rotor next followed by placing the rectifier end frame while making sure to add the generator washer onto the rotor followed by pressing the rectifier end frame with a 29 mm socket wrench. To install the cord clip and four nuts for 80 A models keep torque at 4.5 N.m (46 kgf.cm, 40 in.lbf) while 100 A models require the same torque for their four nuts. Begin by tightening the pulley nut manually before using the pulley holding device to reach 39 Nm (400 kgf.cm, 29 ft.lbf) torque and ending with a pulley nut torque of 110.5 N.m (1,128 kgf.cm, 81 ft.lbf). The rectifier holder needs installation with four rubber insulators followed by tightening four screws to 2.94 N.m (30 kgf.cm, 26 in.lbf). Position the bracket holder with correct orientation before fastening the five screws at 2.0 N.m (20 kgf.cm, 17 in.lbf). Then apply the brush holder cover. Placement of the rear end cover requires end cover and plate terminal assembly using specified bolt and two nuts before attaching the rear end cover with three nuts and terminal insulator secured with a single nut. For the 100 A configuration users must install the generator cover together with the cord clip designated for Canadian markets but other regions require only the cord clip installation with final tightening at 16.6 N.m (170 kgf.cm, 12 ft.lbf) while monitoring rotor motion.
